I should have known, but after so many years of noticing this author's books in airport bookstores and the like, I decided to give this a read. Sorry to seem like a lone dissenter, but I was turned off at the pat and rather cliched message of this story. Maybe for the teenager who is not all that keen on reading in the first place, yes, this might be a worthy read, but if you love litererature that has some substance to it you will be disappointed. Again, if you are new to reading anything spiritual, perhaps, this might be a good place to start.( But even the Harry Potter books are masterpieces compared to this). The message is great, the writing is fine, but the book in general left something to be desired. Cheap paper, bad printing, and large type make it look and feel like a cheap paperback dressed up in it's big sister's clothes. Making money while he's still famous? I think his message is worth more than this cheap paperback with a hard cover.

I have read a number of Coelho's books now and I still think this one is the best (with the Alchemist and Fifth Mountain tied at a close 2nd). This book touched me deeply because I could easily see myself in Coehlo's struggles. It inspired me to resist evil/worldly forces and open myself to the divine purpose for my life. I really feel like reading this book gave me clarity that I never had before. I couldn't figure out why I kept getting "stuck" and felt so unfulfilled. I really felt like life was living me instead of the other way around. I found this book to be an incredibly powerful eye opening experience. Coelho is, hands down, my favorite author. After reading several of his novels, I couldn't wait to read this book. And I was not disappointed. Although there are countless formulas for writing love stories, somehow this book was different. I was captivated. Coelho has such an amazing way of expressing the character's feelings that you come to really know the characters in his stories. All of Coelho's novels have themes, this one being 'forgivness'. At first, I didn't really grasp why, but after reading it, I think its a story about forgiving yourself. Pilar (the main character in this story) takes you through a week that she spends with a childhood friend whom she hasnt seen in over a decade but happens to be in love with. Coelho has rewritten this story from Old Testament and its kind of religious story - there are lot of references to the Bible and Gods. Sadly I'm true atheist and I'm against any kind of religion, so I didn't enjoy this book as much I wanted. I changed the theme of Elijah talking with the angels and God with Elijah talking with himself, with his "inner angels". This made this story a little bit more readable for me. Maybe this is the way you have take religion, but still I don't like this kind of symbolism or view of world. But the main ideas in this book are still valid, whether you are religious person or not. Eleven Minutes is not my favorite Paulo Coelho book. This is the story about a girl who fell into prostitution because she was poor and vulnerable and like everyone else in the world, looking for a better life. She fell into the trap.
