This review first appeared in the AZTCS journal. When I glanced at this book, my first question was, "Who are these guys on the cover?" Before scanning the contents and index, my usual first step in examining a new book, I searched for the cover credits. I found none. I use the term Unix as the authors use the term, to designate all Unix based systems including Linux, Solaris, OSX, and the BSDs as well as Unix. The 400+ page paperback book is divided into 21 chapters. Each chapter ends with exercises; the solutions are found at the end of the book. The book's copyright is 2005 but the fundamentals of the Unix based operating systems don't change much so this book is by no means out of date. Included is a CD of KNOPPIX 3.7. As a security consultant I am sometimes asked for reference books for new security managers. These individuals need help bringing their enterprise under control. Hardening Network Security is a good book for this sort of problem, although it is important to recognize a few technical errors outlined below. My favorite part of the book is Ch 1 ("Do these seven things before you do anything else"). The seven are (1) change default account settings; (2) use administrator accounts for administrator tasks only; (3) identify unused or unnecessary ports; (4) disable/shut down/remove unused and unnecessary services and daemons; (5) remove rogue connections; (6) set up filters for malicious content; and (7) test backup and restore procedures. Ancient Magic provides nine systems of thematically appropriate (mostly biblical and Roman) magic outside the Hermetic system in Ars Magica. These systems are, for the most part, alternately too powerful or marginal for the players to get their hands on without it being the basic focus of the game, but there are some gems and the others do provide interesting aspects for non-player antagonists. The best magics in the book are the fertility magic, which is based on Neolithic society, and "defixio" magic, which is based on Roman cursing practices. Both magics add abilities to the mage that are interesting, beyond the limits of regular magic in the book, and won't unbalance the game if allowed into regular play. [I'm adding this review because as of this writing there are only two other reviews, and I am not sure either is particularly helpful.] As someone else mentioned, some of the distro-specific implementation details in this book are indeed dated. But the key ideas are all here for one to build and implement a security plan, and that is what counts. Covered are such basic concepts as: packet filtering, shutting off/removing unneeded services, disaster recovery, software management, and others. It's surprising to me how many folks I run into who don't understand these critical areas. 4 out of 5 stars: respectable Linux security beginner book with lots of (sometimes extraneous, occasionally outdated) information.
