I am an avid reader of mystery novels and I must say this is the worst novel I have read in 20 years. I kept pushing on hoping it would begin to come together, but alas with 20 pages to go, and the ridiculous story line I had to just put it down and throw it away. That is a first for me. Don't waste your money on this loser.

I used to really enjoy Patricia Cornwell's work, but I got very little enjoyment out of The Front. It's a small book, more of a novella than a novel. The publisher reduced the overall size of the book and set the type with line-and-a-half spacing just to make it appear as if you're getting you're money's worth. The plot just doesn't ever develop. Without very much explanation as to how, the 40-something year old mystery is solved. Detective Win reads an old box of files from the original case and without revealing very much to the reader about what he finds in the files, he announces just what had happened. I won't be buying any more books in this series.

Once Cornwell stopped writing the Scarpetta novels in first person, they have gone completely downhill. NOW if you read the earlier novels, they are GREAT. Point of Origin.. my personal favorite

I really like Patricia Cornwell. I have read all of her novels and while this is not the best of the best it is still good. I read this about four years ago and from time to time it draws me back to it. I think that Ms. Cornwell's research into the subject matter that she writes about is fantastic. I can visualize her words as I read and those are the books that I like most. I will continue to be a fan and I'm waiting for the new release next month!

Reading "post Mortem" is like getting to know the Chief ME of the Commonwealth of Va., up close and personal. To know what ticks her off, what are her strengths, and her weaknesses, how she is at a glass ceiling where she must fight with male colleagues, out to prove her inadequate in more than one ways - all of that and much more. This being the first in the Scarpetta series, the book shows a lot of promise, by showing a gritty ME, who will not buckle under any pressure, may it be from the unidentifiable serial-killer lurking in the dark streets of Richmond, or the Police Squad officers, and more importantly, the bureaucracy that is out to prove her incapable of her job. This book pits Scarpetta against what she thinks might be the work of serial killer Temple Gault (one of Cornwell's better villians); however, the plot leads to a more sinister conclusion and involves Munchausen's syndrome by proxy. The book delves into the personal lives of the characters and we see the development of the relationship between Scarpetta and Benton Wesley as well as the triangle of Wesley-Scarpetta-Marino that is evident in other books. Scarpetta's niece Lucy is dealt a devastating blow when her lover betrays her and jeopardizes her job as well as her life, and Marino debates staying in the small North Carolina town that the murder occurs in ...
