If you like the zombie genre in books and movies, you will HATE this book. Don't be fooled by the glowing reviews of wanna-be authors, this book is boring, boring, boring. Some stories you will have to skip entirely. Others you will get halfway through and wish you had skipped them entirely.

The vast majority of these stories have NOTHING to do with surviving in a world of the undead. They are flights of whimsy by otherwise reputable authors that happen to weave a dead person into the narrative.

These stories are pretentious, self-serving and banal. If these are the best short stories the editor could come up with, the zombie genre is dead, and it's not rising any time soon.

Despite Second Tier Art, Gaiman Delivers
A review of Ultimate Sandman Volume Four
By Michael DeMeritt

This is the penultimate of graphic art story telling, otherwise know as comic books. Neil Gaiman's Sandman stories are by the far the greatest fantastical setting tied to a modern world with real problems written in comic book form. Volumes 1, 2 and 3 are superior to volume 4 only because the art is significantly better. The last issues of Sandman decided to take an ugly, if not boring, turn artistically. The result separates the reader from the characters they have come to love and fear. It is unfortunate the overly cartoon style was incorporated in the final story run of an otherwise fantastic series, but the story to be told is just as powerful as those that came before ... The otherworldliness of this book reminds me of goethe's faust. The dip from our reality to another reality is smooth and therefore real.

1. This is not the novel. This is a comic book adaptation of the novel. That said, it's very well done, but you need to know what you're getting.

2. I have some issues with it. It's mentioned several pages in, that it's a very cold summer and that Coraline has to bundle up, but she's drawn wearing T-shirts and short shorts and flip flops.

3. Second issue. Coraline also takes "the key" with her to the other side, but the Other Mother sends a rat to get "the key" from Coraline's apartment. Then the Other Mother locks the door. It's mentioned that there is only one key. That confused me. Plus, Coraline eventually uses her own key to escape. I'm not sure if this discrepancy is in the original novel or just in this comic book version.

I am new to Neil Gaiman. I never read Sandman, and first read his novel Neverwhere (excellent). I really enjoyed American Gods, but less than Neverwhere. It is definitely more of an urban fantasy, taking place in our real world with fantastical characters mostly taken from obscure foreign mythology. While Neverwhere toggled between our real world and the fantasy underworld, American Gods takes place all within our real world, implying that the fantastical is happening all around us. I missed the creation of the fantastical world done so well in Neverwhere.

In American Gods I did particularly like the interludes in the early part of the book that told the stories of foreign gods as they arrived in America. I found the lead up to battle between the gods to be too drawn out and in the end ... Read More

This piece of fiction is one of my favorites of any genre, not just graphic novels or comics. Sandman is compelling and original in its characters especially in the way Neil Gaiman weaves myth and traditions into an unfolding scene. There are very few books I can read or movies I watch were I can't either predict what will happen next or predict the end. With Sandman Preludes I couldn't predict anything and it was great to be taken on a trip with dream.

Which brings me to the five reasons for 5 stars:

1) The showdown in between Chorozone, the High Duke of the Eighth Circle and the Dreamlord. This was a very, very interesting twist on the old "shoot out at the OK coral." I loved it.

2) The reaction John Constantine has to Dream and then their working together to find dust ... Read More

I first read this book in college. I'd drive my poor roommate nuts because I would stay up late reading and laughing really hard.
LOVE this book!

Here I am only writing about how the Absolute Sandman Volume three (ISBN 978-1-4012-1084-7, © 2008) doesn't thrill me by it's printing & bookbinding standards (both done in China). It's the only volume I possess so far.

(1) First and worst: the ribbon page marker has very visibly stained the pages 206/207 and 256/257. (2) The printing doesn't seem to be too great either, eg. on page 246 in the white area on the bottom of the page you can clearly see how the printing of the back page shows through (also, the bottom half of the page is crinkled). (3) Many pages stuck together on the bottom edge because (I guess) the cutting blade had a bad spot. (4) On the right paper edge there is some glue residue. (5) Quite often the surface of the paper isn't clean. (6) And last, but not least, the endpaper is flawed/has a ... Read More

I'd started reading this one years ago, then put it down for some reason, and my daughter picked it up. She's nagged me on and off ever since to read it.

Stardust is a fairy tale, with all that implies. There's an impossible quest, true love, things that aren't what they seem, and the triumph of Good and cleverness over Evil.

Tristran Thorn, the product of a human father and, unbeknownst to him, a fairy mother, ventures into Faerie to capture a fallen star and bring it back to win his true love Victoria. He finds the star, which turns out to be in the form of a girl. He encounters a variety of obstacles, including a witch who wants the star's heart to restore her youth and a set of brothers who take sibling rivalry to new heights, who'll stop at nothing to get the jewel the star has with her.
