The book deserves attention, not necessarily for the qualities of the writer, but for introducing a biased opinion in the world that was supposed to pertain only to "un-opinionated" academics. Worth reading if you have an open mind, no matter of the direction chosen in career and life. It gives another type of perspective on improbability than the establishment.

This was mostly a masturbatory essay by an author unbelievably taken with himself. The entire first third of the volume explains to the reader why the author is so smart, and why everyone else is so not smart. He embarks on a series of ad hominem attacks condemning many different people and professions as stupid, while offering no evidence outside of the fact that their trading account may have "blown up." Yes, the first third of book was "noise."

Moving onto part two, we actually get something for our $16.00: we get a basic statistical probability class reduced to laymen's terms. Taleb is certainly not revealing knowledge previously unknown to the world, but we do get maybe 25 pages of "signal."

Taleb's writing style is horrifically jumpy, and lacks the most basic flow techniques, ... Read More

Taleb once again. Although you may require some knowledge on futures and option trading to understand the bottom of the story, it is nice book, light to read and usefull. If you trade on futures and options you should take a look inside, not becuase of the technical content but to have a close look at the man's ideas.

Jim Gatheral has done everyone in quant fin a service by gathering and organizing his lectures, practical execution issues, and experience in this welcome volume, The Volatility Surface: A Practitioner's Guide. This is simply an excellent, clear work that defies the logic that good valuable books in finance don't get written because authors make more money elsewhere. Compare Gatheral with the execrable collection of disjointed papers with Jarrow's name slapped on it (Volatility, Jarrow, et al,1998). This is the book they were trying to write, but it took a practitioner who had his hands dirty and worked hard to try to explain what he was doing to write it.

Topics are rolled out extremely well, and Gatheral dives right in to where practitioners swim: volatility isn't a single data point, or a smile, but ... Read More

Books : Fooled by Randomness: The Hidden Role of Chance in Life and in the Markets
I would suggest that this book is NOT for someone who has a clear view of where they are going in life, and how they will get there. For in both the large and small events in life, there are unpredictable events. Nassim Taleb talks about how we handle those events, and more importantly, how we can use them in our favour. If you are one I recommend not to start the book, the reading may change your outlook. Permanently.

Taleb is a market trader, with experience of having survived several severe financial storms - `difficult trading conditions'. The book is peopled with real and composite characters from his trading life. Most are no longer working in the market, a result of having `blown up'. The essence of the volume is in the title, describing situations where an apparent underlying order was merely randomness ... Read More
