Oil and other energy resources are the flashpoints of modern world politics, and they will be at the center of future conflicts. Author Michael Klare analyzes energy politics from a global perspective, presenting his points methodically, from continents to nations to oil companies, eventually working his way down to the pipeline routes that deliver the oil and natural gas to consuming nations. Although, because of this structure, the book at times reads like an almanac, the minutiae do not diminish the importance of the story Klare tells. getAbstract recommends this book to oil industry executives and other serious students of petropolitics.

Resource Wars presents an interesting thesis about the causes of up coming wars. The book is well written, through and detailed. There are copious foot notes describing the sources. The thesis of Resource Wars is that conflict for scarce resources, especially oil and fresh water will drive wars in the future. In Klare's view the geology and geography of resource distribution trumps ethnic and political causes of war. The book was published in 2001, but obviously written before the terrorist attacks on September 11th of that year. The lack of discussion of terrorism in future conflicts made the book seem dated, and incomplete. Of course the author could not predict that event, or its consequences. All of these are words that describe this book, and so many more that I can't even imagine. As somebody who spends a lot of time working on Energy Policy, this really helped put the issues I work on in perspective from a general standpoint. The depth of Klare's research is astonishing. For anybody who doesn't fully understand the energy crisis hitting our country, this book is a MUST-READ.

"World Security" is a book that seeks to introduce readers to the main issues that currently dominate the field of international security today. A selection of some of the topics included in the book are; arms proliferation, ethnic warfare, criminal violence, human migrations, etc... There are 19 different chapters each written by a different author. As such, each chapter does not go into too much detail on their specific topic. Instead, offering the reader only a very introductory survey of the issues. Given this structure I think the book will be most appealing as a textbook for an introductory university course on the issue of international security.
