Stalin has been spotted, or rather his ghost has been seen in the Chistye Prudy Metro Station. Has he come back to Moscow to haunt the underground? Hardly. But the powers that be want Arakdy Renko to investigate and when he arrives on the scene he does indeed find people who had seen old Joe in the flesh, well not the flesh exactly.

So why was Renko given the case? Was it because he was investigating a woman who may or may not have hired cops to kill her husband? Was it because he resents ex-black beret soldiers who are now cops, but don't have the chops for the job? Was it because he's not a team player or is it simply because he's the cop the bosses like the least? Maybe a combination of all of the above.

Renko suspects Nikolai Isakov and Marat Urman, two of these ... Read More

I was glad to follow along once again with my sturdy investigator Arkady Renko, and to be able to return for a Russian history lesson. I thought this was a complex story that I had to read carefully, but Martin Cruz Smith ensured that all the parts were pulled together to make for an exciting read. I wouldn't rate Wolves as one of Mr. Smith's best novels, but it still was a fantastic read. Highly recommend to all Martin Cruz Smith fans.

Arkady Renko is introduced in this book as a Moscow investigator. There is a bizarre triple murder in Moscow. Three bodies are found, frozen, with their faces and fingers gone. Renko is the chief homicide investigator. He's brilliant, indefatigible, honest and, as cops everywhere are, cynical. He is heading through dangerous territory in his investigation, confronting the KGB, FBI and other authorities to find the truth.

Cruz Smith's best since Gorky Park. Protaganist, Arkady Renko, wounded though he is, manages to rise to the occasion in his pursuit of identifying a fellow Russian pulled from the waters of Havana Bay. Set in today's Cuba, with its beauty and crumbling decay wrought by years of communism, our hero teams up with a beautiful Cuban policewoman and becomes embroiled in a world where Russians are despised. Throw the rituals of Santeria into the mix and you have a recipe for murder, deceit, and perhaps reasons for Arkady to get his life back on track. A wonderful read with great characters!

5.Polar Star by: Martin Cruz Smith

Books : Polar Star
"Polar Star" is the second Arkady Renko novel. In this one, Renko has been kicked out of the Party and more or less exiled to Siberia during the Glasnost-era of the Soviet Union. Renko is now working on a Soviet fishing trawler, not a choice career move. As in the earlier novel "Gorky Park," Detective Renko is an outsider, alienated from the Soviet system and regime, but not fond of Americans or the West. And as in Gorky Park, the Americans are definitely not the good guys.

My main criticism of this novel is that it is bleak and somewhat depressing, and the author's murky writing style contributes to this. On the other hand, the novel has a gritty, authentic feel that makes this one an interesting and entertaining read. Recommended.

I really like Smith's writing because he makes the characters come alive. Unlike many writers whose characters seem to be mere necessities to move a plot along, Smith gives you a sense that these are real people. That is what draws me to his books and keeps me turning the page. This book, I couldn't put down.

In December 6, you have a character like Bogart in Casablanca except the setting is the "Happy Paris" bar in Tokyo. Harry Niles is the anti-hero mostly out for himself, but just can't seem to turn away from people who need his help, even if it means he puts himself in jeopardy. Very interesting character and totally believable due to Smith's writing skill. If you like a well told story filled with interesting characters being tossed about in very tumultous circumstances, you'll like ... Read More

"Rose" is a novel that without question, I would never have seen or heard of without Amazon's listamania system. But as it happened, someone liked this book and listed it and made it sound interesting enough for me to read it.

Blaire is a mining engineer desperate-for person reasons-to get back to the gold coast of Africa, which, although he was born English and raised American is as much his home as anywhere. But with no money and no good reputation he is at the mercy of the Bishop Hannay who will fiancé Blaire's return if-and only if-he will return to the town of Wigan (where he and the Bishop share a birthplace if nothing of the same history) and find Hannay's daughter's missing fiancé, who was the towns curate, John Maypole.

Blaire isn't a happy but he takes the gig, only to find a town ... Read More

Every book has to end, I know that, but I felt cheated when I closed "Red Square". How dare Cruz Smith actually finish this thriller? How could he not have added a few more pages of his delicious and irresistible writing? Arkady Renko, the incorruptible and love-lorn Soviet detective, is on the trail of the people who killed one of his informants. He is also pining for the love of his life, who is now broadcasting pro-western propaganda to the fast-collapsing Communist empire from Munich (the action takes place in August 1991). As luck would have it, Renko ends up in Munich as he tracks the killers. The plotting in this novel isn't great -- there are too many coincidences and Renko does remarkably well in Germany, given it's his first time in the West and he speaks little German. The writing is addictive as ever and reaches new ... Read More

1992's "Red Square" is the third of what are now six Martin Cruz Smith novels featuring Russian Investigator Arkady Renko. In "Red Square," Renko returns from exile in Siberia to resume his criminal investigation duties with the Prosecutor's Office in Moscow, only to find that the Russia he left behind is falling apart, almost as fast as Renko himself.

Martin Cruz Smith provides a pitch-perfect portrait of Moscow in the last days of the Soviet Union. Communism is crumbling, replaced by an informal and often criminal free enterprise. Moscow itself is run by ambitious businessmen, rapacious apparatchniks, and various murderous ethnic mafias. A street "banker" used by Renko as an informer suffers a savage death at an marketplace outside Moscow. The stubbornly honest and dedicated Renko begins an investigation that soon leads ... 10.Stallion Gate by: Martin Cruz Smith

Books : Stallion Gate
This is the first Martin Cruz Smith book that I have read, although I have seen the movie version of Gorky Park. This book is a different genre. It is an historical novel, not a suspense thriller.

The author has done his research well. He has gotten his facts right about the physics and engineering of the Manhattan project. Some of the New Mexico settings that he describes, for example La Fonda Hotel in Santa Fe, are ones that I have visited, but decades later than his 1945 time period. There may be some let down at the conclusion of the story because we know from history how the first atom bomb test worked. We also know the fate of the Titanic, but Hollywood keeps making movies about it. Historical films and novels share a similiar attribute. People will object if you change history too much.

To make you like this ... Read More
