I have seen many reviews of this graphic autobiography/memoir on various blogs, but it wasn't until I read one that suggested that Persepolis was similar to the Maus books by Art Spiegelman, that I finally decided to check it out from the local library. I read both Maus I and Maus II in college, where they were assigned reading for one of my husband's English Lit classes, and I borrowed them from him. From the moment I started reading them I couldn't put them down. They were both horrifying and entrancing at the same time in their detail of World War II and it's long-term effects on a Jewish father and his relationship with his son.

Persepolis, while not about the Holocaust, is similar in that it is set during the time of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, and part of the Iraq - Iran ... Read More

Persepolis, originally published in two volumes, is an autobiographical graphic novel by Iranian expatriate Marjane Satrapi. It chronicles her childhood in Iran during the Islamic Revolution, her coming of age in Austria, her return to Iran and her second departure, to France, after her failed marriage.

Satrapi's black and white art is thick-lined, simple and spare, and it fits the book well. The vignettes of everyday life she presents are fascinating, because of Western unfamiliarity and because of her tremendous openness and honesty.

Ultimately, Persepolis is an engaging, many-layered work that gives an honest, revealing view of a way of life that most Westerners are extremely unfamiliar with.

The Complete Persepolis: Now a Major Motion Picture

This is an excellent movie. I was moved and amused. I laughed and I cried. I actually bought copies for all my friends. I was so impressed I bought the graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi which was also excellent. Thank you Marjane.

This sequel to Persepolis was just as powerful as the original, detailing Marjane's difficulties as an immigrant in a new country. Her life in Austria gets off to a rough start as she ends up boarding at a Catholic school where she knows no one. When she finally finds friends, she ends up taking drugs, and at one point lives on the street as a homeless person. After hitting rock bottom, she returns to Iran only to find out that she doesn't fit in there anymore.

I liked Persepolis 2, and found her story of life as a teenager in Austria and Iran to be fascinating. I have to say that I did prefer Persepolis over the sequel, because the sweet innocence and crazy hijinx of the younger Marjane was enchanting and heartbreaking at the same time. As far as the skill of the art and storytelling, it completely lived ... Read More

Embroideries is a wonderfully funny graphic novel detailing the romantic lives of women in Iran. Each woman's story spans just a few pages, but touching, amusing punchlines are delivered every time. The illustrations are lively and gestural, capturing the personalities of Marjane's family and friends. The book is very relatable. It would be a good discussion starter for a book club or a parent broaching the subject of love, romance and courtship to young women.

One of the more amusing stories is told by a woman who, after noticing that her middle aged husband was being distracted from her middle age self by twenty-something women, had plastic surgery that took fat from her behind and used it to perk up her breasts. He loves her new breasts - but in fact is kissing her rear!

I get nervous when reading new materials from a favorite author, in this case, the post-Persepolis Marjane Satrapi. But "Chicken with Plums" preserves the style and outlook of Satrapi's earlier work without being derivative.

In this book, we meet Nasser Ali, a sensitive yet narcissistic Iranian musician trying to locate a new instrument to replace his broken "tar". Along the way, we learn of his tempestuous family life, his true love, his reluctant courtship and his (mostly) faithless children. It is the misfortune of Ali's family and friends that he leaves a string of broken lives in his wake. Satrapi does a wonderful job of narrating the last days of this selfish and myopic anti-hero, using her trademark black-and-white ink drawings, her fertile wit and marvelous ability to tell complex stories with simplicity, ... I ordered this book for my daughter, who's five, after reading Satrapi's Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood and Persepolis 2: The Story of a Return. The former I had to read for a campus reading program and found appreciation for the author's graphics and delivery.

My daughter really took to the book. The story was longer than most of the books she has been reading but for many nights in a row, she read the entire book on her own. There is more text on the pages than in "learning to read" type books but not so much that it is overwhelming. It's a good transition to other books like Library Lion.

The graphics are eye-catching and I appreciated how the story was a little more involved (you have to think about the point) than many books for children are, at least those I have encountered.
