One of my college professors recommended this book. It is fantastic. Good descriptions great pictures. Very good buy.

The National Geographic fieldguide to the Birds of North America was the standard-bearer for fieldguides from the mid-eighties, when it replaced the Eastern and Western Peterson guides as the favorite among critical birders, until the release of David Sibley's guide in 2000. The Sibley guide brought many new innovations but was too large for field use and, absent any habitat setting, the drawings were not lively. Seeing little need for wholesale changes to keep pace with Sibley, recent editions of the National Geographic continental guide have offered just a few innovations. Well - I wrote an in-depth review and this site or IE lost it. So, here is the short version. Simply a new standard in birding field guides! Will absolutely replace all other field guides I might take with me out into the field while birding in NA. The new features are outstanding, useful, and thoughtfully designed. The construction quality of the book is outstanding. Paper and covers of high quality. Combines all the best features (and then some) from all the best field guides. Must buy!

This book has excellent content, but the first printing had the stiff binding that wouldn't allow the book to open fully, making it very difficult to read. The second printing has a more flexible spine where the pages are just stuck to it. After four months of very casual use, the pages began falling out. This is the poorest bound book that I have ever seen.

The pictures and descriptions are outstanding. This book is a great start to learn about birds and how to identify them. It's also a painless way to learn some basic bird biology.

On a recent trip to Arizona I got this guide because the National Geographic guide to birds of North America is so good and thought the excellence would carry through the line. This might be a good supplemental guide if you have another reference and want something small to carry in your car but of the first three species I tried to identify two weren't included here. I ended up getting the Kaufman Guide to Birds of North America because I didn't own a copy and it had the birds I was trying to identify. There are some pretty photographs but few variations are illustrated and it just isn't complete enough for me.

Finally, a book with specific places to go for good birding by regions and then by state. This book has been so helpful. It tells what birds to expect where saving all levels of birders much time. It is a great companion to National Geographic's Field Guide.

This is a nice, simply guide to Carolina birds. A nice feature is the index by bird color (which also has little headshots of the birds) -- this makes it very easy to identify your backyard friends.

Good book for a short birding trip. Does not have all birds in Maryland. Peterson Field Guides are much more accurate.
