The murderers appear to be one thing but are in fact something entirely different. Think schizophrenia. Davenport is also doing surveillance on the sexy wife of a lowlife criminal. There is some fun in that too.This is a interesting story with many surprizes and is fun.

A demented married couple is going around the upper midwest in order to murder old people for their antiques. This twist on what constitutes the "usual" serial killer in mystery novels, made this book stand out, for more reasons than just the excellent writing. Davenport has quickly become one of my favorite American fictional police officers.

Phantom Prey is an excellent book. As always, John Sandford has you sitting on the edge of your seat as you read this book. I could not put it down and read the book through the night. Absolutely worth a lost night of sleep! Check it out, because you won't regret getting this book!

I'm a fan of the Prey series and unfortunately I have in the past read them here and there, but not in any order. I recently started at the beginning and wish I had started there from the start. Doing that enables the reader to better follow the character development of Davenport. Having read some of the later books, it is in Winter Prey that we are first introduced to Weather. Their relationship in later books makes more sense now. Winter Prey gives us the villain of "The Iceman." The crimes, chases and evidence collection is made difficult by the voluminous amounts of snow and harsh temperatures. The temperatures are 30 below zero, thus making it physically dangerous to be exposed to the elements for any length of time. Lucas is free lancing in the small, rural area of Northern Wisconsin. ... At the end of Eyes of Prey, Lucas beat villain Michael Bekker mercilessly as opposed to killing him, which is what he really felt like doing. After all, one of Bekker's victims was Davenport's actress girlfriend. This book opens with Bekker's trial and his escape from the courtroom as the jury retires to deliberate. While the escape is clever, it's not very realistic for such a vicious serial killer. I think he would probably have been a guarded by more than one guard. But, it's fiction and the escape leads to an exciting story. One wonders throughout the book why people don't run from him and why they seem to trust him to walk with them to empty parking decks. Very good book, the start of the Prey series. Once you start you can't put it down. You'll want to read all the Prey books after this one!

This is another solid police procedural by John Sanford. For me, it seemed to drag in places, but in all fairness, that could have just been my mood and circumstances that made parts of it difficult to stay interested in. All in all, I love the Prey series, and look forward to reading the next one.

Do not expect to enjoy reading this book. It almost seems to be an expansion of the most chilling crime headlines in a large city paper.The unrelenting climate of the north-central states serves as background to this bleak story of sudden sociopathic rage. Characters suffering from weak personalities and poverty are sucked into a tornado of violence which spreads outward to encompass the innocent bystanders at scenes of crime and police families who are targets of revenge by criminals who blame specific police officers for the deaths of friends and relatives caught in sting operations. In the last Prey book, the reader did not know who the bad guy was. In this one, Night Prey, the identity of the killer is known to the reader, and the reader is allowed into his psyche and is a part of the deterioration of that psyche. Both presentations of these stories were done well. Usually I like figuring out who the killer is, but Sandford does both ways in a compelling manner. Another interesting component in this book is Lucas's female partner, Connell. She has an interesting secret that I won't give away, but the flawed character of Davenport grows as he comes to terms with her situation. Weather is here too, first introduced in Winter Prey. Another superb addition to the Prey series.
