Books : The Annotated Mona Lisa: A Crash Course in Art History from Prehistoric to Post-Modern
Warning--this is a RAVE review.

I wish I had discovered this wonderful book years ago. (I found it at a museum store in Balboa Park, San Diego.) I see that it's available for almost nothing from after-market vendors. I paid $25 for mine and it was worth every penny.

As a teacher of Art History to students who are not always interested in the subject, I am constantly faced with apathy and occasional hostility.

For some reason, art can be intimidating to many people. It removes them from their comfort zone and often makes them feel inadequate or even downright stupid. This little book removes some of those challenges by providing insightful explanations with simple language and beautiful illustrations. It's not just for school. This is a book every ... Read More

I read the 1981 edition of the 1980 book. With 448 pages the book appears to be exhaustive. However, subtract the bibliography etc. and the 67 p appendixes of quoted and/or translated historic documents and we are left with 338 pages. These in turn have to get halved, because of the extensive footnotes, leaving some 170 regular text pages - a rather thin book, actually.

As was the science book standard at the time, the author shows off his education with copious use of Latin, Old Greek and occasional modern foreign languages in the footnotes, not always translating them, in the case of Old Greek not even transscribing it into the Latin alphabet. Considering that some pages may consist of just seven regular text lines and 43 lines in small print of footnotes, this adds to an obstacle ... Read More

I have read many books about top level execs rise to fame. This is a great read full of insights into Novak's trial and tribulations. It gives some great insider history of big companies strategies, successes and failures. It is not a book that will teach you specifics. It is a book that reminds us of techniques that work and why. I read this book on a recommendation and I am so glad I did.

In reviewing other reviews of this book, it's apparent that those approving of it / objecting to it are mostly people who approve of / object to same-sex marriage. Which tells us little about the book's veracity or validity.

There are no truly neutral observers, simply variations in the degree to which one is prejudiced toward or against a particular position. This book is so heavily footnoted and appendixed, and Boswell seems to be at such pains to clarify exactly what he is and is not claiming, and why, that it is hard to believe he is not being intellectually honest, despite the fact he had a vested interest in promoting same-sex marriage. In short, Boswell gives at least the illusion of objectivity. This is enhanced by the fact that he builds his argument over many chapters, showing the ... Read More

As someone who served in the Army, I have had plenty of NBC training and can say that this book is something that everyone should take the time to read. In fact I learned even more from this book because it is presented in a way that anyone can understand, and it is targeted for use by the civilian population. READ IT, it may save your life one day.

6.A Cat's Night Before Christmas by: Henry Beard
October 25, 2005
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : A Cat's Night Before Christmas
This amusing little book is written from a cat's point of view and gives us another look of how a cat might think.

Starting with the very first line "Tis the night before Christmas, and all through the house, Not a creature was stirring---I'd killed the last mouse." Well, you get the idea!

The colorful illustrations are great and wait until you see Santa and his sleigh crew.

Don't want to give anything else away, if you're a cat lover, you'll get a good laugh from this old, but new Christmas story.

The author, Henry Beard founded National Lampoon magazine.

7.How to Dad by: John Boswell
May 01, 1990
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

>>More Details
Books : How to Dad
You might buy this book as kind of a gag gift for new dads, but it is loaded with actual content. How to skip a rock across a pond. How to teach a kid to ride a bike. Etc. The kinds of things you really admired your dad for because he could do them; the kinds of things you would like your kid to remember you for. It's funny and light-hearteded but years later you will still be sneaking a peak at it for a refresher course (even moms will!)

My book never arrived and the sellers never responded to me with a reason as to why my book got here. I waited a month and then was forced to wait an extra week before I could even file a refund claim and then it took a few moe days to actually get my money back.
