This book was recommended to us by the instructor in charge of our Foster Parent Training class. We have yet to try the techniques, since said foster children have yet to materialize. I hope I can deliver the lines in this book without sarcasm or reprisal. Here's one: "You're welcome to join us for dinner once you're done mowing the lawn." I think Future Foster Child will just call his social worker and tell her that we refuse to feed him. Perhaps we will modify this one: Regular dinner is served between 6 and 6:30 for those whose chores are complete; certain healthy snacks are available until bedtime. This book has changed our home life considerably. We have three children under 5yrs and our house can be crazy at times. I started using the methods discribed in this book, a little at a time, and what a difference it makes. My daughter, who is 3, is a pleasure to be around (not the case a few weeks ago). My oldest, who was very moody usually, has been quite happy lately. And last but not least, my 2 year old is not quite as demanding and the whining has almost completely stopped. I would recommend this book to anyone with young children. It is a must read.

We have raised two teenagers somewhat successfully. They are 22 and 27 years old now. The reason I purchased this book is because we have adopted a 15 year old and her attitude and behavior have been a challenge. This book was recommended in the book "Adopting the Hurt Child" to provide practical tips for handling the control issues and power struggles. It has been invaluable to me and is helping us concentrate on our relationship rather than fight over everything. When using the techniques offered in this book, one needs to be prepared to exercise a lot of patience - there are no instant results. The reason for this is that you offer choices to your teenager and then let them be responsible for the consequences. As a teacher this is my bible- meant it to be 5 stars...A fabulous resource for classroom management. It teaches teachers how to set boundaries in a loving and logical way. Children learn to take responsibility for their behavior in this kind of environment.Children want to know where their boundaries are and when you are consistent and apply them gently the outcome is a self-controlled child. Also must- reading for parents Parenting With Love And Logic (Updated and Expanded Edition)and Discipline With Love and Logic Resource Guide.

This should be a pamphlet, not a book. You could read the whole thing in 20 minutes. There are like 3 sentences on each page. It has helpful information, but it's overly simplistic -- like it was written for a third grader. Save your money and don't buy this intro book. If you are interested in the Love and Logic parenting philosophy, just buy one of the other (longer) books in the series.
