I almost gave this novel 4 stars, because there was a point at the near-end where I didn't like where the author was going. But in the last pages, he redeemed himself, and I see why it *had* to be told the way it was.

That being said, I loved Atonement. It is one of the best books I've read in years. Robbie and Cecilia's fiery love made me catch my breath, and I know this is a book that will leave me thinking for days.

Unlike McEwan's "Saturday", this story does not take place all in a single day,but still, most of the story centers on the events of a twenty-four hour period. The author's inimitable use of foreshadowing made this reader want to climb into the story and "do a little counseling". The inability of the two central characters to communicate their inmost emotions leads to unbelievably sad and irreparable consequences for them.
Fortunately, the story can be read in one or two sittings, so the final resolution isn't long in coming.

This book is sooo good on many levels. The author did research for this character, the descriptions of neurosurgey were particularly fascinating for me, but also the interior thoughtlife of the doctor contemplating his life and the events of the times (the run-up to the Iraq war in 2003). This is a novel I want to make several friends read. It is very well-written and thought-provoking.

I mostly read novels written more than forty years ago, but occasionally I look into contemporary authors with reputations as good writers. Amsterdam was a foray into Ian McEwan's work, and this is a good book to read if you want to convince yourself that you're not missing out.

McEwan writes well, and has interesting thoughts which find their way into the book. Unfortunately, by the end you realize that these thoughts are merely peripheral. They seem to be inserted to make this, as another reviewer puts is, "the sort of novel that wins awards". But how this book won the Booker prize is beyond me.

What's impressive is how McEwan manages to ruin the book in the last 50 pages. Imagine Virginia Woolf had decided that, at the end of "To The Lighthouse", the Ramsey family would go to the ... Read More

Ian McEwan's slender novel, "Enduring Love", moves along at such an episodic fast clip that it might remind readers more of an Ian Fleming James Bond tale, than as a sophisticated literary confection from one of Great Britain's - and truly the English language's - foremost writers of fiction. McEwan opens quite literally with an explosive opening of such emotional and descriptive power, and one destined to be remembered as among the most memorable literary entrances in recent years. An explosive opening which truly sets the stage for a gripping, often thrilling, fictional exploration into obsessive love. It is such an intense exploration that readers may ponder whether the book's title ought to be "Obsessive Love". In the aftermath of a freak, tragic hot-air balloon accident, science writer Joe Rose finds his life turned ... Read More

Stunning, simply stunning. I finished this book coming home on an airplane and I forgot where I was for a few hours while reading it -- which was nice because I absolutely hate flying any more. I won't rehash the plot here (it's widely discussed and there are many websites that also discuss the novel), but I will say that the writing was superb.

I loved the ending (I won't go into that either), and didn't even see it coming. I started flipping backwards, and as I realized what McEwan did there, I was even more impressed with what I'd just read. It was definitely one of those endings you don't forget easily, and one that sneaks up on you.

I'd recommend it to anyone who loves a good work of literature and who wants something a wee bit different. McEwan never fails to amaze me with every book I read, and this ... Read More

A couple on holiday in Venice meets an unusual local couple. The initial "comfort" soon turns to uneasiness, and later to horror.

The writing is exquisite but I guess I prefer later McEwan, where the horror is more disguised and implied.

I haven't had the best of relationships with the books of Ian McEwan. I found Amsterdam dull and pointless, Enduring Love neither enduring nor lovely, and it wasn't until Atonement that I actually enjoyed any of his writing. A good friend very wisely said I should stop there, be grateful that I had at least found one worth reading and spend my time with other writers.

She was quite right, of course, but I took The Cement Garden on holiday with me because, well because it was short. I wanted to get through a book a day and at 140 pages it was a prime candidate. And it has turned out to be the second best McEwan I've read.

It is a disturbing tale, written and set in the 1970s, of four children aged between 6 and 17 who fend for themselves when they are orphaned. The narrator is the 15 year old boy and you witness the death of his ... Read More

I've read lots of Mr. McEwan's work, and every other novel is brilliant. Unfortunately, this is the Other novel. Atonement and Enduring Love were wonderful, Saturday a disappointment, and Amsterdam a disaster. This is the worst yet. The plot centers around the kidnapping of the main character's young daughter and his reaction to the tragedy. There is no significant character development, a gratuitous Prime Minister, a suicide sweetly explained away by the deceased's wife, and pages of rambling, seemingly pointless prose. There is a certain redemption in the last few pages, but that does not offset the pain of the middle part. Try one of his other works instead.
