How does Kimmel do it? She grips the reader into a tale (based on her very skewed childhood memory) and then she throws the reader a curve ball. Sometimes, it's the very last sentence of a memory or the last word. It is that insightful nugget of information that allows the reader to know so much more about the situation than the child-storyteller does.

I laughed out loud through so much of this book, and when I was done, I wanted more, so I picked up She Got Up Off the Couch. It's a book you will want to share.

I had read Zippy, and just wanted more, so I bought this book and I loved it, too. I do have to say it's not AS hilarious; there are parts that are just sad, exposing the problems of the family, which weren't as obvious through the eyes of the younger Zippy.

Still, I loved it and want to read more, but there's no more. :-(

Almost immediately, I became totally immersed in the "used world" of the primary characters, all of whom are part of an antiques emporium in this small Indiana town. We have the owner, Hazel Hunnicutt, whose own history is presented to us in flashbacks; her voice is revealed through descriptions of her life - her parents, who are deceased, and her sister, whose drug abuse has complicated Hazel's life, provide the backdrop for her choices - and now, her employees at the emporium assume the role of family for her.

Claudia, a large woman who is often mistaken for a man, has lived a loveless existence, but then an unexpected blessing arrives in the form of an infant - a new life that she takes responsibility for - and when she adds Rebekah to the mix, she has a family of her own.

I just passed the halfway mark on this one, and I've decided that I've closed the cover for the final time. I really don't like giving up on books, but I just can't put myself through this one any longer. It is so disappointing because there is a really good story hidden amongst the philisophical ramblings, religious references, pretentious characters and unbelievable conversations. But I simply cannot bear witness to another one of Langston's temper tantrums or Amos' inability to write a sermon (isn't that what ministers do?) I just cannot relate to any of the characters, and I feel more irritation towards them than anything else. Several of Kimmel's other books look interesting, so I won't write her off yet. However, this one's going back to the library today.

Iodine, by Haven Kimmel, tells the dark, confusing tale of Trace/Ianthe, written in both the first and third person narrative. At first, I was troubled by this format and struggled to get into the story. By the end, though, I think the format pays off. I felt like some parts of this story were brilliantly and beautifully written, and other parts were a bit tedious and cumbersome. After getting into this novel, however, I couldn't put it down.

I am a big fan of Haven Kimmel's adult fiction, so I decided to buy this children's book. I LOVED Orville: A Dog Story. I loved it so much that I actually became choked up at the end and could barely read the last two sentences out loud to my son. This has never happened to me before.

Like all of Haven Kimmel's books, this book flows as smoothly as silk. A homeless dog who has been taken in by various people and always chained up. His longing for love, yet anger at being chained up for days on end. His "adoption" by the farmer and his wife who do not understand him and chain him up too. Just when he starts to give up and lose hope, a girl moves across the road and he knows she needs him.

I loved reading the dog's thoughts as he lay for hours on end at the end of a chain. I loved ... Read More

Ok, well, I liked this book. It's just that I really wanted to LOVE this book, because the writing is beautiful and the author comes with such rich acclaim. But I felt I was kept at arm's length from the heart of this book, like I should have been content being just a spectator when I really wanted to be a participant.

The main character of this novel is Cassie Clairborne, who I suppose (to the casual observer) could be called a pool hustler. I love how she explains herself, though: "`I play American pool, not English billiards, and I'm not a shark. That would be a person who pretended not to be a good player, then stole the money of her opponent. I just announce myself, I say I've come to a place to play their best, and for money, and that person is called. Or I wait for him.'[...] `And do they, ... Read More
