I'm a total Murakami fan, so when I saw this new book--with a playful title from another fave author of mine, Raymond Carver--I couldn't wait to indulge myself with a good read. I was not disappointed. I'm a runner and a reader and a curious watcher of other runners--Murakami lets me indulge all three passtimes, with an overall free-flowing movement that covers the many self-assumptions and insights runners are privvy to in their practice.

This book was truly gave me the bang for my buck!

I purchased this item around the early winter (December-January) of 2007, and finished it November 15 of 2008. (Yes I know I'm a very slow reader). However part of this had to do with the fact that I had almost given up on the book, I'd say around the half way mark.

So why did I give this book a five star? Should the fact that I almost gave up on the book send a message saying that: "if it doesn't hold your interest than the purpose of the book has failed you?"

I say absolutely not. I just gave the book time. After picking it up from where I left off, it slowly trudged it's way back into a great book. Sure there were what appeared to be "slow parts" or "irrelevant chapters", but everything by the end of the ... Read More

Kafka on the Shore is a dream voyage to another land that is nevertheless familiar. It is gentle, violent, abrupt and entrancing. Murakami's worlds take you through the Looking Glass. Sometimes, the world you enter seems strange, disconnected and totally unrelated. But at other times, you feel like you've been offered a glimpse of your personal space of awareness that is typically hidden, but now, suddenly revealed. This novel feels like an invitation to revelation and the unknown. It is brisk, awakening, and warm. Totally unique.

Murakami is internationally known for a body of work that encompasses a surreal, dreamy, time-sequence-challenged form of fiction (as well as a number of non-fiction pieces). This novel -- said to be somewhat autobiographical -- is a mesmerizing piece of fiction. Narrated by an adult looking back on an adolescence of confusion and uncertainty, it will certainly trigger knowing nods from its readers. The book is more dramatic than my life (and I suspect more than yours as well), but the deep uncertainty of life in the transition between living at home and making one's way in the world should be familiar to most. Characters in Murakami's books tend to talk a lot and even write letters (how dated!). But they also tell intriguing and believable stories that both anchor them in a specific time and place but also express the ... Read More

I picked this book up at random at a book store. Something about the cover just caught my attention, and it seemed oddly familiar.

Over a year later, I finally picked it off my shelf and started reading. Initially, it read like a gritty detective novel. Then, I noticed hints of what felt like an early 80's Cyberpunk novel (which may be a result of it's original 1985 release).

This book is typical Murakami: a main character who thinks himself fairly ordinary, in whom other see something special. There is an interleaved story and many very fine details which make the world come to life. The main character spends a lot of time reflecting and talking about 1960's Japan and Americana.

Unlike other Murakami books I've read, though, this one has a bit of a sci-fi or Cyberpunk flavor to it. ... Read More

I have a love/hate relationship with Japanese authors. Like many that I have read before, Murakami is very visual and incorporates the sense of helpless- and hopelessness that both intrigues and unnerves me. I enjoyed the slow courtship that the main character unwittingly steps into. The imagery of a big Japanese city that gives itself over to desolate darkness is appealing. I want to wander those streets, but with a knife, as it seems no place for the faint of heart. Some sections were hard for me to understand, and I felt that there were some unresolved issues, but I chock that up to my American sensibilities which want my protagonists to fight until they overthrow the evil. Recommended if you like to peer into the Japanese underbelly.

This gem of a novel was required reading for a world literature class I took. I waited until the last minute to read it, but it ended up being a breeze to get through because it was so fantastically odd. I would not be the least bit surprised to find out that Murakami was a Stanley Kubrick fan. I fully intend to check out the rest of his work.

I received this diary today and fell in love with it. It is beautifully designed using Murakami's words and many images inspired by his work. This is a must have for any Murakami fan and a beautiful piece of introduction for all who are not familiar with his work.

Murakami's world is one of imagination. In his world, he can make the mundane seem surreal and the surreal seem mundane. But I think there is an echo of longing and loneliness in his work. I recommend you read the story "The Year of Spaghetti." This, in my mind, is one of the best short stories EVER written. He captures it ALL here.

I've said it before, I truly do like Murakami alot because he likes writing these normal situations like eating donuts and reading a newspaper and watching TV in his stories but for some odd reason it just never gets boring. This book is the sequel to "The Wild Sheep Chase" which became one of my favorite books this year. And yes, it does connect to everything eventually. Still, as most sequels go, I liked the first book better and I do think it could have gone without this little book. But I bet the "Sheep Man" fans wanted this book and it started getting stranger and stranger as it finally wrapped up the little twists. I do have one complaint about this book though but it's a little thing really. One of the characters in the book was this Filipino prostitute whom Murakami wrote as someone who speaks very broken English. The thing is though, Filipinos don't ... Read More
