My opinion of A Lion Among Men is that it is still below the fantastic Wicked, but much, much higher than Son of a Witch. Son of a Witch was iffy, but this is very, very strong. Saying that this is a strong book however, does not mean you can skip Son of a Witch, because a lot of the plot in this is rooted in Son of a Witch, especially character-wise.

Some of the scenes were moving, such as when the Cowardly Lion reveals his past, and others recognizably Maguire with its cynicism. What it also has, which Wicked did not, is sheer intensity. The very end of the novel comes to a climax that is the literally, the best I have ever read. Not only is it a roller coaster ride of twists, but also provides plenty of answers to questions that began being asked as soon as the Clock of the ... Read More

I am an avid reader, and have read many, many books. I purchased this book to read because I love the music and the play. I did not read this book because it held my attention (because it did not do so- ), But rather, I read it because I was curious to know the biographies and backgrounds of the characters mentioned in the musical. It did provide me with the information I desired, but I had to sift through a lot of "sludge" to get it. This book should be rated "R". It's descriptive talk of the various sex scenes is disgusting. It details sexual positions, orgasms, lust, cheating, adultery, and other steamy subjects. Though the book as a whole is not like that, there are several chapters that are just written pornography. I don't recommend this book to anyone; especially minors. But, even ... Read More

I truly enjoyed Gregory Maguire's "Wicked" and I was thrilled to find out that he had continued on the story of Oz. Son of a Witch was even more exciting to me, because I felt like the action had been tripled, the suspense intensified, and you honestly felt an attachment to the people of Oz.

Some people think it is crazy to get caught up in a fantasy world, but it is hard not to when you read stories like this one. Oz isn't just some fanciful world of lollipop guild children and dancing scarecrows that you remember. Gregory Maguire created a very real, very dark, very honest world that reflects the world that we live in today...

I felt the whole story was dragging and slow paced. The concepts in the story are nothing new. The writing is mediocre.

This was a pretty good read overall. I thought the development with the gooseboy was an interesting take, but for the most part it was rather slow reading. I thought the characters were all full and believable, albeit eccentric like most of Maguire's creations.

First, let me re-acknowledge that Maguire is not for everyone. This book continues that trend.

The overall concept sounds fairly airy and fun but at its heart, it's a lot darker than you might imagine.

There are two story threads going on throughout the novel and each one is very intriguing. The threads sometimes intertwine and even when they don't directly touch, you find yourself wondering about the balance between the two.

The story arc of the fairy creatures is highly imaginative and really a lot of fun. The reader is placed directly alongside other characters in the novel who are "hearing" the fairy tale at the same time that we're reading it. This juxtaposition of character and reader truly helps bring the reader into the second story arc and relate to the turmoil going ... Read More

I like the way this author writes, absolutely. I like the story, I like the setting... but what happens when the main character annoys the CRAP out of you?

She's a writer researching her next book, which has a lead character with a similar name to hers, only very stupid sounding. It's almost like this isn't Macguire's fault. He wrote the character with so much realism that I actually believe this main character is at fault. She's just STUPID. Maybe he meant her to be that way?

Either way it was a decent book, just be prepared to find Winnie to be very pathetic and annoying.

Good little short, great for young readers and not too dark. It reminds me of Grimm's a little bit due to the humanistic qualities of the characters.
Recommended for young readers and adults that have 'little time' to enjoy reading.

This edition of Baum's "Marvellous Land of Oz", "Ozma of Oz" and "The Emerald City of OZ" is great for those reader's only familiar with Baum's first Oz novel. The book is well compiled with the original illustrations by John R. Neill.

The introduction by Gregory Maguire (author of "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West) is informative and it is really interesting to read why and how these three texts interest an author whose biggest selling book is a novel based on these children's books.

This edition also includes a brief biography of Baum, suggestions for further reading and a reading group guide.

This is a marvellous edition!!!
