This book is really a history of Arkham and its founder more than it is a Batman story, and the story is a dark one indeed. The artwork is much different from that of other Batman graphic novels I have purchased (Batman: Year One, Batman: The Long Halloween, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Batman: The Dark Knight Strikes Again) and is a little hard to get used to; I had to really struggle to figure out what Joker was saying. This is the story of Arkham, and it is a very good, if somewhat dark and depressing; but then again, this is Gotham. It makes me wonder if there's some sort of otherworldy / supernatural beacon in the city that attracts criminals, crazies and crazy criminals.

The J.H. Williams art on the Club of Heroes story in the first half of this collection only serves to underscore how not-ready-for-prime-time Tony Daniel (the artist on the 2nd half) is. The last chapter is illustrated by Ryan Benjamin, and seems to be a prank DC is playing on the readers. I remember Ryan Benjamin from back in the early days of Wildstorm, and at this point he seems to be doing a parody of himself. It's TERRIBLE. I honestly have no idea what the editor was thinking when they hired him. Maybe he was willing to work for 50 cents a page? It's mystifying.
The story: Grant Morrison writing Batman (on drugs?). What else do you need to know? I'd give this collection 5 stars if it weren't for the meh Tony Daniel and the BLECH Ryan Benjamin. Definitely still worth picking ... Read More

For some reason, Grant Morrison is given opportunity after opportunity by major comic houses after falling flat time and time again. Marvel gave them one of their flagship franchises, the X-Men, and the result was a convoluted mass of silliness, ridiculous plot twists, out of character behavior by long-established characters, and of course gratuitous sex and violence.

In this trade, the reader can see how Morrison (mis)handed one of the biggest opportunities handed to a writer on the Batman franchise in the last 5 years - the opportunity to explore the possibility that Batman and Talia had a child during one of their prior affairs.

This book is ridiculous and utterly free of any creativity or cleverness. See, since Robin is the "good" son, and Talia's son is the bad son, so his ... Read More

((NOTE: This review is for both volumes one and two.))

I've never read a better Superman story, and I've read many Superman stories. Morrison weaves you through Superman's struggle to understand himself, his relationships, all seen through the eyes of his own mortality and the potential loss of life bearing down upon him. It was for me some of the finest reading I've ever done.

There were moments in the middle where the story bogged down, but each of these places contained their own little gems; so rich in fact, that I couldn't even justify it costing a star in this review.

Morrison begins with a simple premise, and like a true story-teller, he takes it to a logical conclusion. This story will remain as one of my all-time most treasured experiences with the written word. ... Read More

6.Batman: The Resurrection of Ra's Al Ghul by: Grant Morrison, Paul Dini

Grant Morrison, Paul Dini, Peter Milligan, and all others involved have done better, but what's been presented here is a fun, action-packed, almost cinematic story of the resurrection of one of Batman's best villains: Ra's al Ghul. Batman, Robin, Nightwing, and a whole host of others, good and bad, race to prevent Ra's from possessing the body of Batman's son, Damian Wayne, and defiling the mystical hidden city of Nanda Parbat. Although the ending is rushed and the artwork could be better, the story works and is quite enjoyable. Not one of Batman's best adventures, but quality nonetheless.

This volume collects the fourth quarter of DC Comics' fifty-two issue weekly serial. If you read the first 39 issues' worth of this series then you'll almost certainly be buying this final act. The various plotlines reach their respective conclusions: some were fascinating while others disappointed. The multiverse segment at the end was too abstract for my tastes. The art seemed more disjointed between these issues than earlier in the series. However, I was generally pleased with the series as a whole. With about 300 full-color pages, each of these "52" books offers tremendous value for Amazon's current price of under $14.

DC's 52 was highly ambitious, which made me more than a little nervous, since projects as big as these usually fall flat. With the big three missing, Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, DC picks up some acilliary characters and kind of turns them into the modern age superheroes. Really DC is trying to kick start some other books. But they do a good job, especially since there is a book a week. Bravo gentlemen.
