This book virtually made me love mathemathics. It's a book with an unique set of features in it's appendix, and the writing style of the author is almost like you are actually reading a great novel about calculus.

This is for the audiobook. I read the print version a few years ago, & quite enjoyed it; print version would get more stars. When I got the audiobook, I was looking forward to many hours' worth of chores being vastly more entertaining....but. The audio version bogs down occasionally, such as during the longer, more detailed CDC research discussions (& I'm a biologist & researcher myself!). The real problem with the audio version is the narrator. Mr Ralph has one of those whiskey/smoky gruff voices, which I usually like, but his leaves me wanting to cough & clear my throat repeatedly. Also, he never pauses at appropriate spots --such as when switching chapter to chapter or drastic scene jumps-- and it can leave the listener disoriented for a moment. Worst of all, his voice ... i could get through this book in a few weeks and it made calculus a bit easier. focus on the problems and you should fly through any good calculus book.

A strong anthology, with a 3.57 average, with the Simmons being the weakest part in general. However, the Martin 'hard boiled werewolf' novella is excellent. The "memorable mathematics" part of this book treats many interesting things. One is "a simple approach to E=Mc^2". First we substitute the relativistic notion of mass m=m_0/sqrt(1-v^2/c^2) into F=ma=d/dt(mv) to get the relativistic F=ma, which is F=m_0a/(1-v^2/c^2)^(3/2). The work done by the force moving a particle from 0 to x is energy=integral from 0 to x of relativistic force=(change in mass)c^2. Another topic is rocket propulsion in outer space. Consider a rocket with no forces acting on it. Then mv is constant since d/dt(mv)=ma=F=0. The rocket moves forward by throwing out parts of its mass in the form of exhaust products with velocity -b relative to the ship. Since mv is constant we have mv at t=mv at t+dt, i.e. mv=(m+dm)(v+dv)+(-dm)(v-b), which reduces to dv=-b(dm/m) which we can integrate to get, e.g. the burnout ... Read More

This text is expensive and pointless. While it is obviously designed for upper division courses, it lacks concrete examples and a clear thought pattern. Sections do not seem to connect in a comfortable way and they should be much longer. The odd-numbered solutions pages at the end are a joke; most say "proof not shown." Do not buy.

I bought this solely for the rare Stephen King story "The Replicants", which is good but feels more like a first chapter in a book that a short story (unresolved ending). The other two King stories are okay ("Sneakers" being the better of the two, but both are published in Nightmares and Dreamscapes. The real treat here is Dan Simmons. I am more familiar with his sci-fi and mystery works, and was happily surprised by these stories which are more in the horror vein. "Metastasis" is an excellent story about what cancer really is a result of (with several revolting scenarios), while "Iverson's Pits" is an atmospheric piece that involves the corrupt legacy of an inept and cruel Civil War officer. If you like the period piece horror of "The Terror", you'll enjoy this long story. I didn't read the Martin novella.

I bought this solely for the rare Stephen King story "The Replicants", which is good but feels more like a first chapter in a book that a short story (unresolved ending).
