While the 1984 has come and gone, George Orwell's masterpiece of the same title is still a classic.
In this dark alternate reality, oppressive super-governments control the world. Eurasia consists of mainland Europe and Russia. Eastasia is made up of china and southeastern Asian states. Finally, Oceania consists of the Americas, Australia, Southern Africa, and the British Isles. These governments are almost identical in their policies and philosophies, but are constantly shifting alliances and enemies with one another. Although it is available, there's never enough food or good housing for the average citizen. Socialist oligarchies control every aspect of life, and are coming closer to complete control of thought by the day.
What really makes this book shine is Orwell's brilliant ... Read More

ANIMAL FARM is a very well written little satire that actually is quite hilarious in places. Scholars of the beginnings of the former USSR may enjoy dissecting the novel and figuring out who or what on the old "Manor Farm" Orwell meant to represent what reality in Russia. Happily, the rest of us can simply enjoy the cleverly drawn animal characters who exhibit many familiar human traits. This is a great book to teach that can spark many interesting discussions that touch on history, sociology, psychology and politics while showing students qualities of good literature. Many kids who think they won't like ANIMAL FARM end up being pleasantly surprised and not just because of the brevity of the text.

I am a big fan of science fiction. This book might be classified as such, as it was written to be set in the future when George Orwell published it in 1949. But as time passes, this book is showing itself to not be so much of a story as it is a warning. There are already so many phrases from the book that we use, like Big Brother or Newspeak. And the way some governments are now does not bode well. This is a classic novel that more people should read as a warning, so that we can avoid this kind of dystopia.

After having read both 1984 and Animal Farm multiple times, I purchased this hardbound book with both titles. It is a convenient package for somebody like me that likes George Orwell. If you can re-read George Orwell, this book is highly recommended.

As others have said before, both of these are great titles. I would highly recommend this book.

Written 75 years ago, this book is still amazingly relevant at the beginning of this century, where so many of us are under- and non- employed. This is Orwell's account of the absurd and futile work that occurs in the Paris and London of his economic day. The writing is flush with black humor and lucid irony; Orwell really shows us why he is a literary giant in this book. And, this book should also be a reminder to convince you, if you go out to a restaurant, to never ever piss off the waiter and the people who are handling your food!

Describing his descent into poverty, beginning in Paris where all his money gets stolen, Orwell links up with a Russian emigre (Boris) who finagles a waiter job at a dive Russian eatery, with Orwell ending up in the dishroom and being the gopher for the wait staff. Orwell goes on to compellingly ... Read More

My mother spent a frightful childhood in revolutionary Barcelona near the cathedral "Sagrada Famila"...FAI(anarchist)territory. Orwell's account is extremely close to what my mother recounts.

She told me about the compulsory closed fist salute she had to give as a young child in front of the local church (turned FAI party headquarters). The buildings in her neighborhood bedecked with the red and black colors of the anarchists, and her frightened crawling across the kitchen floor as bullets flew between the closely billeted Left militas every night. A horrible period of history...the precursor to WWII.

Orwell did not let ideology hamper his account of the facts. There is more detail than dialectic materialism in "Homage".

The hospital scene is particulary morbid...Orwell survived a shot to the neck in Spain by ... Read More

Orwell writes so well you want to give him a standing ovation. This collection contains several classic essays -- "Shooting an Elephant", "Politics and the English Language", "Such, Such were the Joys" (memories of his schooldays) -- as well as amazing pieces on Dickens, Kipling, and the state of literature in the 1930s ("Inside the Whale"). Whether writing about the English national character, analyzing the content and effect of popular comics for boys, or explaining his own compulsion to write, Orwell is always engaging and writes in clear, crisp prose that most essayists can only aspire to.

These extraordinary essays will sweep away any niggling resentment of Orwell you might feel because you were forced to read "Animal Farm" and/or "1984" in high school, and inspire you to seek out more of his work.

This is a great collection.
