Review of George MacDonald Fraser's "Flashman."

As a student and admirer of the Victorian Era and anything Anglophilic I have long awaited the day of purchasing and reading the published "Flashman Papers" from manuscript form.

I have seen Fraser's book advertised and critiqued for many years. I set my decision to delve into the book as sort of a guilty pleasure and I was not disappointed. If this genre interests you, then you should be quite pleasantly surprised.

The abstract from the book itself clearly tells the prospective purchaser what to expect: "Flashman follows Flashy as he lies, steals, duels, and wenches his way from 1839 England to India to the wilds of Afghanistan. Along the way, he survives military incompetence, ambushes, torture, ... Read More

3.Treasure Island by: Robert Louis Stevenson

There's been so many movies based on Treasure Island that it's almost impossible not to be somewhat familiar with the story. Stevenson shines here, managing to carefully craft a story for children that will also appeal to adults.

The boy hero of the story is respected enough to be included in the plans and tribulations of the adults onboard, but is not kowtowed to the point of offending adult sensibilities. The pirates are realistically rendered, but not to the point where real children would likely be frightened - the violence here is fantastical only, of the sort that was seen so vividly in other classics, such as Peter Pan. Indeed, I am tempted to categorize Treasure Island as a children's classic, alongside such classics as Barrie's work, ... Read More

Harry Flashman has always been a character on the periphery of my awareness. I remember seeing the books around and never picked one up, but now that I have, I'll probably read the rest of them. This book was just a lot of fun. This tale of Flashman forced to impersonate Prince Carl Gustaf of Denmark by Otto Von Bismarck after being tricked into coming to Germany by Lola Montez, is one of those combinations of history and farce that are entertaining when well-done. Fraser moves the story along well, with clearly defined and often hilarious characters and an anti-hero who is truly larger than life. Occasionally the story has a tendency to meander, but Fraser always ends up pulling it together with one more scene of Flashman's accidental heroics, generally brought forth by his incredible cowardice, a ... While the author and the underlying allegory of this book are Christian, I think prehaps non-Christians could be turned off by the label of religion attached to this book, and miss out on an incredible reading experience.

Lilith is a dark, eerie, and beautiful fantasy, very Victorian in writing style, very imaginative and evocative in the depth and mystery woven into the story. There is immense complexity in this story, from the depiction of childish, unrestrained innocence in the characters of the Little Ones to the mysterious white leoparedesses and the chilling darkness of the Shadow and Lilith herself. This is a book worth anyone's time to read, as long as you can handle the writing style of the 1800's, which unfortuantely discourages too many from reading the classics.

Also a strong presence in Lilith ... Read More

I just finished reading a Tolken essay of what a Fairy Story is supposed to be.

Then I read this book. This one is right on. I was in the world with the people in the story.

Lilith was the first George MacDonald book I read.

Really, there is no comparison. As a fairy story Phantases is better. Especially considering that it was written first. Also, I did not miss the religious references. They are both wonderful!!!!

I would have to say that C.S.Lewis's remark--that he has never read anyone who is more continually close to the Spirit--fits the author quite well. MacDonald eloquently combines intellectual thought and creativity with the innocence of prayer, showing that both are able to be used together in the pursuit to intimacy with God.

This book has been a great help in my meditations. I would recommend it to anyone who desires to have a greater connectedness with the Spirit. The only downfall is the 200 year span in English terminology. If one can get past the "doths" and "thees" then this book will be sure to be a favorite in your collection.

With the exception of "Royal Flash" and two of the stories in "Flashman and the Tiger", I give all the Flashman stories 5 stars. They are that great. However, for sheer twisted brilliance of plot, I rank this one up there with "Flash for Freedom". In those two books, George MacDonald Fraser puts his protagonist through the most hilarious, yet unbelievably sadistic situations you could possibly imagine, and just when you think our (anti) hero has finally escaped the jaws of death, GMF delightfully trips him up and throws him back to the wolves. This ending of this particular novel is pure genius and would alone be worth the price of the book, even if it weren't preceded by some of the greatest historical fiction and humor ever written. Who ever thought the Indian Mutiny could be so much fun?

For those of us to whom his books brought such pleasure, "Flashman on the March" will always have an air of sadness about it, as it was the last Flashman book the late George MacDonald Fraser ever wrote. As with a prematurely deceased friend, we Flashman fans lament the adventures we'll never experience with our dear departed Flashman: the U.S. Civil War, the Mexican fiasco, Rorke's Drift, et al. However, we're thankful for what we were given, and this book is a worthy finale to the canon. The writing is as excellent as ever, the history as bizarre as it is true, and the story as vivid and enjoyable as any in the series. I appreciate the point of view of those who found this work a bit formulaic, i.e. the usual mix of exotic temptresses, unintended involvement in a horrific Victorian war, the disconnect between character and reputation, etc. ... Classic over the top GMF. The Reavers draws on three of his previous works, in no particular order: The Steel Bonnets, a serious (yes, serious) history of the border region between Scotland and England in the Tudor era; The Candlemas Road, a novella about the area and era he wrote some years ago; and The Pyrates, a send up on all those 30's Errol Flynn pirate movies. He moves from the late 16th century to the 21st and back again without missing a beat and the anachronisms will leave you in tears, if not totally convulsed with laughter. It's sad that this was his last book, because there will never be any more; at least we can take comfort in the fact he went out on top.
