When initially published, these essays provided a salutary textual critique of anthropology. Today they read as essays whose implications are circumscribed to the work of that generation of American cultural anthropologists who developed in the shadows of modernist giants (namely Geertz). This collection represents their mid-life crisis, rather than the field of ethnography. Most of their students (and students' students) have not repeated that generation's unreflexive ethical idealism and political naivete. This progress was not a result of these essays. The exception in this book is Tyler's innovative and actually experimental proposal for "writing culture". Otherwise, be warned. Read these critiques by baby boomer-era anthropologists with a grain of salt.

This classic work by Marcus and Fischer is still important to an understanding of changing global and local conditions in postmodernity and how we, as ethnographers, might proceed. This text was very helpful in the researching and writing of my ethnography (now a book: Native Americans in the Carolina Borderlands: A Critical Ethnography, Carolinas Press, 2000). I needed help in conceptualizing hybrid cultural forms and found it in Marcus's and Fisher's text. I also found the text useful for helping me think through the popular cultural critique that needed to be articulated from the everyday discourses of my participants. If you are interested in critical ethnography, this is a must read. Anthropologists, Sociologists, and folks in Cultural Studies and Communications will want to have this text ... Read More

"The Affect Effect" is a welcome volume. In political science--and in the study of political thinking and behavior--the rational choice perspective has become very powerful. While it yields some genuine insights, it is also one dimensional. People are not simply cost-benefit calculators, are not solely means-ends analysts. Emotion matters. And that is what this volume is about. The volume is intended as much for a more academic audience than not, so it will be something of a challenge for the non-cognoscenti. Nonetheless, a useful and welcome volume.

The editors begin by noting their "scope of work" (page 1):

"This book responds to a resurgent interest in the way emotion interacts with thinking about politics and, as a result, the way citizens engage in or withdraw ... Read More

The Wrong Stuff is a good read on a number of levels.

It challenges our overuse of the word "hero" and forces us to be more discerning and skeptical about those we so readily put on pedestals. Apart from those few minutes over North Vietnam, a bit of luck combined with flying skill, there was nothing heroic about Duke Cunningham. Character flaws were evident in his youth. What he did in Congress should come as no surprise. As Sartre says, the end is in the beginning.

The Wrong Stuff illustrates the need for political reform in campaign finance, the legislative process of earmarks, ethics and oversight. These are dry subjects, but by putting a face -- albeit a sad and corrupt one --on the subject, the authors have penned a readable, well-understood page-turner. They have made ... Read More

This is an informative, thoughtful, academic presentation of a model of political judgement that may compete with the rational choice model that has dominated political science.

The authors present a model whereby two domains or process facilitate decision making, a rational deliberative domain and a threat surveilance domain. Politicians must appeal to both domains when conducting a campaign. In the area of the rational deliverative domain, the politician must build enthusiams for their leadership while reducing the enthusiams for the leadership of their opponent. At the same time, the threat surveilance domain must be activated, creating anxiety. Thus a successful campaign must ensure that anxiety about the candidate is kept at a minimum while raising anxiety about the other candidate. This model ... Read More

This book is good for defining what political intolerance actually is (many people don't know or beleive they do when they dont'). It also provides good empirical evidence on tolerance in america. Essential reading for the topic.
