Pagan Christianity is one of the most provocative and courageous books written about the church in recent years. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and cannot wait to see Frank Viola's next book, Reimaging the Church. As a pastor who ministers like a missionary in the inner-city with at-risk youth, bikers, the homeless, ex-felons, AIDS patients, and other people not always warmly welcomed in the mainstream, I have found I have to be "non-traditional" in my approach to church. What I learned as I read this book is that many of the methods and practices we do out of necessity in our church and ministries actually reflect with accuracy the practices of the first century and early church. Jim has found a quality idea, instead of spending millions to make our churches "seeker sensitive" why don't we just ask outsiders. Are we as christians above focus groups? Basically what Jim Henderson has, is a one man focus group. Of the ten chapters, its interesting to see what Jim and Casper have to say about the megachurches, but i'd read the chapters on Lawndale Community Church and Drummer's Church as quality examples. Look passed the critique system as well, look at the friendship that is created between these guys. This is a quality example of friendship, dialogue, and not getting caught up in debate (which usually just makes people mad). Barna uses his sociological research to demonstrate the relative absence of real disciple making in the evangelical church in America. But the book is not negative as a whole. He goes on to cover several churches where discipleship is faithfully practiced at some level, and makes a strong call to return to the biblical ideals in this area. His definition of discipleship is loose, including things like taking a spiritual growth class or participating in an online Christian chat group as possible models, but he has the right idea. This is an excellent book for those who are trying to lead churches in the 21st century. Well laid out and easy to follow. The only issue that I had with the book is that all the references and pronouns are for male pastors and male pronouns for God. It was disconcerting and a little abrasive at the end.

The book was an excellent resource book and the research was extensive and thorough. I plan to purchase 12 of them to teach an evangelism team to each the unchurched in our community. The book helps to reduce the fear of evangelism by understanding the type of a person's needs and attitudes. I belong to a church whose average attendance is 90-110/Sunday and has declined from 175 in l986. Our city of 30,000 has had no rise or decline in population since l986. The book addresses many issues that are applicable to our situation. Thanks for this excellent book. Dorothy W. Franks
