The point of this book, that different people need to be showed love in different ways, is a solid one. I've been telling my husband that for years! I certainly wasn't telling him as clearly as Chapman describes in this book, though. I appreciated being able to clarify my thoughts about expressing love by reading this book. Chapman's ideas weren't revolutionary to me, but were reassuring nonetheless. Aspects of this book didn't work for me. The individual stories were a bit simplistic, full of couples whose marriages seemed totally on the rocks until they tried this easy love language method that fixed everything in their lives. Very good book. I'd say it's a message everyone can grab hold of because it gives you something concrete to focus on. I'd compare it to the way bio-feedback works. I struggled with depression for 15 years. I started getting depressed when I went to college and started living on my own with no supervision. I started drinking and began having premarital sex. These behaviors escalated as most empty, immoral behaviors generally do. My problems never got better, they only got worse. Even though I have shelves of cookbooks, this has been my "go to" cookbook since I received it as a wedding gift 52 years ago. I gave one to my own daughter 25 years ago, who loves it as much as I did. I just purchased this one for my 20-year-old granddaughter who has moved out of the dorm and is in her first apartment. If you have only one cookbook, this should be the one!

This was the first David McCullough book I ever read, a gift from a favorite aunt who knew and was fond of some descendents of TR's mother's family, the Bullochs. Though I was not yet a fan of non-fiction, this book changed my tastes. It's as readable as good fiction, with the added satisfaction of being a true story. David McCullough has a real gift for getting inside the lives of his subjects and making them human, and though he certainly chose a complex and interesting character in TR, this book is also largely about American social history and Roosevelt family history.
