I'm sorry to slam something that has clearly moved so many people as has this monologue script. I also hasten to note that I'm frequently out of step with the tastes of general public, so feel free to take what I'm about to say with a grain of salt....

I do NOT, in ANY way, get the merits of this book/play! What are we going to read about next -- our anuses? The spaces between our toes? Our tongues? ("My tongue, when it curls -- warmly, trustingly, joyously -- against my hard palate... brings me home to myself....")

This piece of work strikes me as the HUGEST fit of public navel-gazing (except lower down, of course) in the past 30 years -- and when you think about some of the writing we've seen in this time, that's going some. On the other hand, maybe it's the naturally ... Read More

Eve Ensler bares her soul in this book. Weaving her personal history and thoughts about her abusive father along with interviews with women from around the world who have been violated, you get a sense of the magnitude of the problem of violence against women around the globe. Her writing is so vivid that you feel like you are there with her or with the women she has interviewed with respect and compassion. It is difficult not to be affected: you can almost see their pain, fear, rage, and hope.

She explores the subject of security, via her reporting of the women whose stories you read, who have been violated, either individually or their loved ones. From Bosnia to Pakistan to Mexico to our own US prisons, Ensler brings you into the lives of women who've been violated, often with little or ... Read More

Eve Ensler is constantly astounding. Her work is thought-provoking and by turns funny and heartbreaking. The Good Body is no exception. A play presented here as a series of essays, it confronts what all women encounter on a daily basis; the ongoing fight to accept and celebrate our bodies as they are, without modifying them to fit some magazine peddler's notion of what is "beautiful."

Eve hates her stomach - as she fights with it and struggles to accept it, she meets many other women who are fighting (or have won) the same battle. Beautifully realized, and I wasn't able to put it down until I'd read every page. It is a very tiny book; only about 90 pages, but every one is a stunner.

This book is inspiring poetry and enlightening personal essays by each amazing author. "Word Warriors" is a must read for every woman/daughter/mother/sister/friend. The poetry shines with clarity/panache/punch and all the ethereal beauty of "The Way Girls Word".

Applause to Seal Press, the editors and visionaries who have presented not only a subculture of poetic performance but the power of transformation each author encountered by bringing their art to the public.

I read this book at the gym and found that I really wished that I had a pack of tissue with me. Ensler's anthology is at times painful to read- the vignettes are harrowing and will leave the reader with a sense of sadness.

I found that I kept on leafing to the back of the book to read the contributors' bios. I wish that the bios were after each poem/essay. This book is not a sunny, fun read, but a heavy one.

The audience for this book is both a lay and academic audience. I would actually like to hear it on cd. I can't help but wonder if the pieces would be more powerful that way (much like the _Good Body_ is better on CD).

Overall, I think the anthology can educate people about the seemingly everyday wickedness concerning violence against women and girls. I think that ... Read More

I was fortunate enough to see this play performed live, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I was already an Eve Ensler fan, having performed myself in a college production of The Vagina Monologues, but I am also a harsh theatre critic, attending 8 or more professional productions a year (for the last 15 years) and often finding them lacking. Neccessary Targets is one of the best plays I have ever had the honor of finding myself engaged in. The characters are female archetypes we are all famillar with, and yet they each have their own unique stories. During the course of the play, they find themselves stomping bravely or furiously down paths they never even supposed were out there, hovering just off the beaten track...leaving the geographically familliar for the foreign, the psycholgically comforting for the disruptive, finding ... 7.Vagina Warriors by: Eve Ensler, Joyce Tenneson

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Vagina Warriors
This is a follow up of the "Vagina Monologues," after Eve Ensler met women everywhere who felt and still feel grateful for Ms. Ensler's work to give women and girls an unstoppable voice that congruently communicates:

1. Go the distance, and then some;
2. Disarm the potentially disempowering force coming towards
you;
3. Demonstate that you are here, and that you matter;
4. Your inner power adds potential to men and women; and,
5. Compassion, not punishment is the answer;

The messages from the following people are especially moving:

Hazelle Goodman, an actor from New York, says, "As a Vigina Warrior,I say to endangered women everywhere, 'Let me hold your broken wing while you fly.'"

Carole Black, President and CEO of Lifetime Entertainment ... Read More

Books : THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES (THE V - DAY EDITION)
This book is a representation of something very important. By turns moving and funny, it is something that all of us should read. The scale of the violence against women, both physically from without and psychologically, often from within, is something of which everyone should be aware and this slim and entertaining volume plays its part in raising consciousness. It is, however, only a representation and feels a little thin; I can only imagine that the show itself would bring the whole to life. Read it, but see the show if it happens to tour near you. I shall.
