This novel would work better for me in diary format or as random reminiscences and without the bait of an important disclosure. Narrated mostly in first person, the episodes that compose the novel do not lead to a climax and do not fulfill expectations. As the story begins, Corey Sifter, the narrator sets the scene for a revelation ("That I would be the one to bring it back now, after all this time"), but also warns the reader that he only knows part of it and has had to guess at other parts. I was certainly willing to go along with him and a novel with such an ambitious title until I began to suspect that Sifter was an apt name for this narrator. An exceptional author; you can't wait to see what the characters will do, and they do not disappoint. Canin is truly gifted.

Great collection of stories that deals with the pitfalls of everyday decisions. The character developments are exquisite, which is what keeps the stories so alive.

Curious about this author whose fascinating interview I read last month in "Poets & Writers," I picked up this book. In many ways the writing style reminded me of F. Scott Fitzgerald in both the story and the language. I thought the question of regional values the book opened with was an interesting one. However, I would have to characterize the flow of the book as disruptive. I found it hard to believe these characters because so many things they did were contradictory and left unexplained. Canin immediately interests the reader with the ease of his prose, but he doesn't convince us that a character's shift in behavior, appearing to be contradictory, is actually quite plausible now. Marshall, the gifted and discontented son borne of a difficult family history, is ironically the author's most consistent character, ... Read More

Ethan Canin is one of my favorite modern novelists. That being said, I feel his books, while still good, have gotten progressively less interesting as he has gotten older. The first two stories in the Palace Thief are my favorite - along with Blue River. Just the way Canin emotes the feelings created by the bonds of his characters in this book truly reveal how it feels to be a young man, what traits are revered by young men, what is found in oneself, and what is lost. I don't know...not sure what there is here NOT to like.
