There's a quote from a review by the Independent on the cover of my copy of "A Lesson Before Dying," and it says "Like the best country songs, straight and true." Since I saw and read that quote every time I picked up the book, I inevitably started to evaluate it's merit based on whether or not I agreed with that review. Was it straight and true? Then I realized, more importantly, does that even matter? "A Lesson Before Dying" is a good book. It's not a great book, or an instant classic, and I don't necessarily think it should be made mandatory reading in schools all over. Story set in 1940's in a small town in Louisiana. Young black man (Jefferson) happens to be an innocent bystander at a liquor store when two men attempt a robbery and gun shots break out. Jefferson is charged with the crime - he is unable to prove his innocence in a town where a black man is guilty before proven innocent - and he is sentenced to death. Jefferson's godmother realizes that Jefferson has no way out of his fate and wants him to hold his head high before his death. So many other 5 stars have been written for this book that I don't have much else to say. I ditto every good thing that was said.

This was the book on CD, unabridged version, and it is great. I purchased this for a college class, and needed to save time due to 10 other novels I needed to read in the same semester. It has been a blessing I have listened to this now more than once, and the speaker is great! His inflections and tone are just fabulous, it is really an enjoyable listen!

In My Father's House has main characters of Oscie Mason and Will McLean. they lived in Manassas where war began, IN THEIR FRONT YARD! This book is not so much about the war but about people and relationships changing throughout the war. I chose this book being doubtfull, but I do not regret choosing it. I have read other books by Ann Rinaldi, and this by far is the best. Oscie Mason is a very brave character she stands up for all of brothers and sisters to their stepfather even when he is most intimidating. If this is a book that you pass by on reading you have missed a great book.

This is a great collection of short stories. Mr. Gaines is a superb talent. I have never been disappointed by anything he has ever written! One of my favorite authors!

Of Love and Dust / 0-679-75248-X When a young black man is forced to work on a white man's farm to "work off" his prison sentence, he astonishes his more moderate peers by refusing to accept the situation as the white society has defined for him. Rather than capitulate, accept the situation, and make the best of it, he chafes under the instructions and cruelties of the landowner, even though his stubborn refusal causes him more pain and fatigue than acceptance would. Our narrator is at first surprised, and then horrified, as the rebellious young man continues to rebel even to the point of seducing the landowner's white wife, and running off with her in the middle of the night.
