Dave Foster Wallace urged writers to eschew irony. I feel the same way, and the reason is that for irony to have its effects the society at large must have a solid moral center of good permeating though it, like it did even after the first world war, although that center was by then seriously deteriorating. Then, when one reads a book like this, one clearly understands and is not afraid to feel the irony of this book; its amoral characters, and its nihilistic portrait.

By 2008, that center is nowhere to be found, and hence readers look for something else in any book; sympathize with the characters, to get something warm and true in the positive sense from the experience, to "enjoy" books, rather than learning a dry lesson (the spare prose helps) in the negative.

The Old Man and the Sea may very well become one of the true classics of this generation. Certainly, the qualities of Ernest Hemingway's short novel are those which we associate with many great stories of the past: near perfection of form within the limitations of its subject matter, restraint of treatment, regard for the unities of time and place, and evocative simplicity of style. Also, like most great stories, it can be read on more than one level of meaning. On one it is an exciting but tragic adventure story. Sustained by the pride of his calling, the only pride he has left, a broken old fisherman ventures far out into the Gulf Stream and there hooks the biggest marlin ever seen in those waters. Then, alone and exhausted by his struggle to harpoon the giant fish, he is forced into a losing ... Read More

This tackles several questions: How war shapes men, past and present and what a real hero is.

Set in the Spanish Civil War, the story revolves around the experiences of a volunteer fighter, an American college professor named Robert Jordan. Filled with idealism at first, watch him reconsider as he faces the prospect of his own death.

One of Hemingway's finest.

I admit I am but a fledgling Hemingway reader..
Definitely not yet an aficianado of the canon!
There are times when I still falter over his simplistic style, his reporter-like, almost point-form and unembellished narration. His pithy dialogue which seems at times so unusual that I am jarred into the realization that I am holding a book in my hands.
But this book, A Farewell To Arms was a fantastic read and has given me a new appreciation, I guess, for Hemingwayism in general.
Genre-wise, it is somewhat of a historical romance, perhaps.
Set squarely in WWI Italy and Switzerland. Lots of war, lots of rain, lots of gore, lots of pain.
I hesitate from saying too much about the novel, story-wise, because truly there are many ways that one could ruin it, by saying too much, ... Read More

This collection is godly. This is what I would bring with me to a deserted island. Would probably have more than enough good fishing tips in it to help me survive anyway!

My personal reading of Hemingway has spanned a lifetime. This short "memoir" aside from 'Islands in the Stream' and 'The Oldman and the Sea', has to be one of the top ten "must reads" for any Hemingway reader...or any reader.

Why?

A Movable Feast describes that (R)omantic time after WW1 in Paris when creative life exploded in all its forms: Picasso in art, James Joyce, F. S. Fitzgerald, Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound; surealism, cubism and ultimately expressionism. Writers travelled to Paris or more so, 'gravitated' to the beautiful city and worked, starved and immersed themselves in their particular art froms.

This is a 'tale' of the 'Starving Artist', as Hemingway descibes his hunger - the smells of bread along the small streets, his belly taking over while his mind focuses ... Read More

The story goes, that when Ernest Hemingway's parents first received copies of In Our Time, they were horrified and furious. His old man sent the books back to the publisher. A year later, in a letter to his father, Hemingway explained to his father what it was he was attempting as a young writer: "You see I am trying in all my stories to get the feeling of the actual life across - not to just depict life - or criticize it - but to actually make it alive. So that when you have read something by me you actually experience the thing. You can't do this without putting in the bad and the ugly as well as what is beautiful."

We know Hemingway more for his off-the-page exploits than those he published, but in these short pieces, peppered with very short (mostly one page) pieces, Hemingway first introduces his ... Read More

TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT is nothing like the Bogart movie of the same name. Hemingway's book is much more hard-hitting, his sparse prose reminding the reader of a taut thriller by Elmore Leonard.

Havana and Key West play prominent roles in this gulf sea adventure. The other factor is unemployment, made more scary by a series of bad luck incidents to Hemingway hero Harry.

Without a job, Harry can't take care of his kids and his loving wife. So, he takes some risky jobs running rum or immigrants for some really dangerous criminals.

The views of the keys and the water in the gulf are beautiful, treacherous and challenging. The writing style is earthy, full of insults and political-incorrectness.

But the Hemingway hero is exactly what you might expect: strong, loyal, smart, ... Read More

I gave a brief try to Hemingway two or three years ago that didn't stick, though I don't remember the volume. Then, the other day, with full-on earnestness, I grabbed up this book. I thought it was pretty simple stuff. He seems to be write absolutely from the gut. Short sentences, bland sentences. Nothing that is deeply thoughtful or even conscious.

He is well-known as a macho writer who nonetheless delivered a genius to mass and critical audiences. But I'm not sure I understand how or why. I ought to try one on his famous novels before haranguing the icon, but there is almost no temptation after reading this collection.

I give him credit for conjuring up thick clouds of weird, dark emotion over seemingly fleeting events (one story in this collection, "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber, ... Read More

I had given up on Hemmingway; his too macho writing and lifestyle bored me - and then I read this amazing book - and am again fascinated by this insightful and clever writer. I am ashamed to admit that my view of Hemmingway had been influenced by the way often weak men have used him to hide behind: "No, I'm not an animal killing, family-leaving egoist; I'm a free spirit like Hemmingway".. Read this fabulous book if you want to get the popular Hemmingway-noise washed away by the great Masters own words; you'll understand men and the world a bit better for it.
