I first learned of this book written by Erik Larson on C-Span's Booknotes. In hearing Larson's explanation of the Chicago's World's Columbian Exposition, I became intrigued by what it took to build and what this Fair represented not only to Chicago but to the United States.
Larson goes into great detail to explain the types of building and expositions that were on display. In explaining the planning and development of the lakefront area, he brings in the major architects of this lavish Fair, they being Daniel Burnham and Frederick Law Olmsted. These rather famous professionals had to overcome financial constraints along with a rather short time span to accomplish this large task. Larson indeed goes into the details and arguments that ultimately formed the greatest World's Fair ... Read More

I totally enjoyed this book. I read it for a book club and didn't expect to like it so much. I spent a lot of my childhood in Galveston in the 1940's and there were people there at that time who had lived through the storm and still talked about it. It is very well researched and I found myself picturing exactly where things were happening and feeling a part of it. Next weekend I'm planning a nostalgic trip to Galveston to see what it looks like after hurricane Ike passed through.

In his opening note, Larson tells the reader that he hopes "to present a fresh portrait of the period 1900 to 1910/ By chronicling the converging stories of a killer and an inventor." The author accomplishes exactly what he intended in this highly researched and detailed account of the lives of Guglielmo Marconi and Hawley Crippen. The back of the book contains over forty pages of sources. I enjoyed this book because it read just like a novel, yet I knew that each action and quote was specifically researched. A slight problem that some people may encounter is the amount of information that Larson so eagerly wants to share about these two individuals. He even mentions that there was so much more that he wanted to share. (Thank you for the consideration Mr. Larson, but I found that there was plenty ... Read More

I must admit I am only half way through the book, having spent the last two and a half hours thus engaged . I have some remarks. First off, I believe that Erik M. Larson may be riding on the coattails of another Erik Larson. When I searched for the latter, pairing it with White City and Thunderstruck, this book came up also, suggesting that the same author wrote both. Far far from it. In fact at the bottom of the Amazon review page I see beneath their tag suggestions. All of these refer to Erik Larson's work. Nothing in this book is historical, true, placed in Chicago, is thrilling, has anything to do with the Columbian Exposition of the early 1900s or is about a serial killer. So if you got caught unawares, Amazon was in no hurry to correct that misapprehension as long as it sold more books for them. After just ... Read More

Erik Larson wrote this 1994 book to study the commerce in guns. He picked the worst case example where a sixteen-year old boy shot a teacher at school. In December 1988 Nicholas Elliot brought a gun to school to scare the teenage boy who was tormenting him (p.55). This true crime book lacks photographs of the people and places, as if it was a work of fiction. The flaw is its blame of an inanimate object for the problem, and totally disregards the political and economic situation where these crimes occur. Gun Prohibition is a form of political oppression that leads to higher taxes and lower wages. The resulting poverty causes crime. Larson is aware of this (p.2), but ignores it!

Larson telegraphs his bias by his choice of subject matter for this story. Choosing a gun used in a crime is like a loaded question. ... Read More
