I love this series of play collections - I own pretty much all of the books by these editors. I use them all the time to find good contemporary material I can perform for class and auditions. This is my most recent read, and there was some really fun stuff in it. I created a monologue from a character's dialogue in one of the plays, which I used for an acting showcase, and I got a LOT of laughs - dare I say the most laughs of the night. Anyway, these are enjoyable to read, fun to draw material from, and interesting to perform. Recommended.

From a playwright perspective, while this is an interesting collection of work, it isn't the type of book that you'd want to come back to over and over again. Many of the plays seem dated and they are certainly a reflection of the editors prejudices, for good or bad. Lots of NY-centric stuff along with a swath of the Louisville Festival-type play. As a snapshot of the ten-minute play, this is a valuable collection to read through and learn from. However, many of the plays aren't interesting enough, or innovative enough, to really take up space on your own bookshelf. Borrow this from the library, read it over and take away what you can.

Unfortunately, I ordered both of the "Ten-Minute Plays" within days. Should have waited to read one first. These plays are not appropriate for all age groups and situations. I was especially interested in finding a few plays for very Senior Citizens in rest homes. Sorry, not one of the plays in either book were appropriate for that audience. Not the books fault just wish better information was available before purchasing. Plays are good for modern audience and younger actors (in my opinion 16+).

I used "Telling Tales" for a drama class and almost all of the plays were well-received and generated good discussions. The book had a good blend of famous playwrights and unknowns, comedies and dramas, and short plays and lengthier ones. My favorie plays were Terrence McNally's "Andre's Mother" and Richard Greenberg's "The Author's Voice." I wish editor Mark Lane would put out a second volume of one-act plays.

These were, in general, The Diary of Anne Frank, The Miss Firecracker Contest, and Agnes of God. Now, all of these are good plays, but trust me, EVERYONE DOES THEM at auditions. That's why this book is so great! First of all, instead of merely giving you excerpts of plays, this book gives you each play in entirety. I loved this book. It was thoroughly compelling--a brilliant range of subject and voice, and the quality of writing throughout was outstanding. I am a fiction reader, and don't tend to read plays, but this book was given to me as a gift, and I highly recommend it.
