This novel is a gem like all of the other Vicky Bliss books. I really enjoy Vicky's character, as well as John's. As an amateur sleuth, Vicky spends the novel attempting to prove that Sir Smythe is no longer thieving and that someone else is behind the theft of King Tut's mummy.

Fast-paced and really cute.

I'll be frank when I say that my opinion of this book is biased since it combines my love of Egypt, archaeology, and women who like to roll around in the dirt. But even so, this was a great book. The characters, the setting, the mystery (although none too mysterious) all really worked for me. Enough to the point where they managed to overcome my usual dislike of diary style writing and period language. I'll definitely be picking up the next one...as soon as I'm done with this review in fact!

The story starts out with our hero, self-described "middle aged spinster", Amelia Peabody coming into a considerable inheritance. With no husband, would be suitor, or close family to stop her, she takes her money and embarks on a traveling holiday to the place she most wants to visit: Egypt. ... Read More

I think this book is an incredible value. Wonderfully satisfying photos for the price. The designs are still very inspirational for Mid-Century Modern fans. I love the series and intend to buy the other editions in the near future.

This is the fourth book in the series. I've only read the first and fourth books. Here, I loved the Ramses character. He is an 8 year old boy with a genius mind and great luck. I did not like the way his mother cut him off so much and refused to listen to him. She was also jealous of his ability to find entrances to tombs and other archaeological finds before she could. I lost some respect for her in this book because of that. It was still a good book, but I preferred the first book in the series: Crocodile on the Sandbank.

CAUTION SPOILERS: In this book, we learn that Sethos, the master criminal, loves Amelia and plans to kidnap her and keep her secluded until she learns to love him back. He appears in different disguises in this book.

Sexual language: none. Number ... Read More

Amelia Peabody is back and this time around she's even better. In addition to archaeologist, world-traveler, and amateur doctor, Amelia is also now wife to Radcliffe Emerson and mother to Walter "Ramses" Emerson. And while being a mother may have mellowed her a tiny bit, her adventurous spirit has not dampened one bit.

Thanks to her husband's sentimentality concerning their son, Amelia Peabody Emerson is certain their archaeological days are over. Then Lady Baskerville, an old friend of Emerson's comes calling. The whole world has watched in thrall as her wealthy husband discovered a previously unknown tomb in Egypt and subsequently died, causing rumors of "the Pharaoh's Curse" to abound. The Emerson's leave young Ramses in the care of family and depart for Egypt as soon as possible. ... Read More

This is a coffee table book filled with interesting essays to complement Elizabeth Peter's delightful Amelia Peabody Emerson mysteries about a family of archaeologists in Victorian and Edwardian Egypt.

The essays cover the history of Egyptology, the British in Egypt, and Islam, as well as housekeeping with servants, feminism, fashion, music, schooling, technological advances and popular fiction in the period. The book is also filled with engravings and photographs, including several pictorial essays.

These are fascinating. One features Shepheards, the Cairo hotel frequented by the British community during the period, which was burned in a demonstration in 1952.

There are also several lengthy reference lists, of (apparently all the) people mentioned in the Peabody books ... Read More

I got this one as an audiobook. I was hoping it would be good, as they had several other in this series. Peters is a prolific writer with at least three series, the Amelia Peabody books, the Jacqueline Kirby books, and the Vicky Bliss books, plus several books that are not part of a series.

But I hated it! The book is told as if it's taken from her diary, so it's all in first person. That's OK, but it means if you don't like the main character, you'll be spending a lot of time with someone who bugs you. And I didn't like her at all. Amelia talks way too much, she's annoying coy about her love life with her fabulous husband, Emerson, and she complains all the time about her son. That was when I really just decided it wasn't worth listening. All she says about her son, named Ramses for mysterious reasons ... Read More

My grandson loves this series of books....but he had not had to do a real book report until he started middle school. His first one was not good but then he decided to do the next one on this book and he got an "A"!
Excellent reading for Star Wars fans! (my grandson is 11)
