Despite the shock and disappointment many George fans endured throughout No One as Witness and What Came Before He Shot Her, both of those books were better than Careless in Red. While George certainly continues to craft her skill at character development and aptly describes presence, personality and English landscapes, in this book she has picked up a terrible habit most notable in Kellerman novels - everything is described with a taint and ugliness that is almost offensive. In this book we get a very good glimpse of Lynley's grieving as he is forced back into the criminal mire. Havers, sadly, is left behind and the reader is still left unresolved on all levels with her own personal struggle in her relationships with Lynley and the fallen Helen. As a fourth grade educator, I would never introduce this book to my students as anything else other than an example of popular culture that perpetuates stereotypes of Native Americans. Attean and other Native American characters speak in broken English, giving the reader the impression that these characters are inferior to their White counterparts. The terminology used is highly offensive (squaw)for both Native people and for women. The relationship that Attean has with girls in his tribe as well as with animals is unrealistic and down right inaccurate. Joseph Bruchac and Michael Dorris are two authors which do an excellent job of writing from the Native American perspective.

This is an interesting read for kids over the age of 10, and for adults as well. The main character depicts a Jewish teenager named Daniel living at the same time as Jesus. Daniel is deeply disturbed over the Roman occupation of Israel and the death of his parents. The book provides an excellent forum to teach children about religious tolerance and getting along with others. The characters are complex, allowing for deep literary analysis, and the historical context is educational, something that adolescents will associate with, given their background in world history. The story is both endearing and stimulating, with an active plot. My 11 year old is planning to read it again.

Spoilers: beware.. Although the book itself was terrific as always, and lot's of Barbara which works for me, the author's decision to kill off a main character at the very end is unforgivable... A character who was so very special.. Most readers I have talked to agree...We are the consumers and have some say...She wrote me and said: " I must be a good writer to have upset you so" Well that is true, but it is also selfish and arrogant to think that what your readers want is irrelevant...if you are a writer who is obviously writing for financial gain... I mean in terms of literature these books are far from it... Then she writes the next book ( by the way, it's not even a Lynley /Havers book, but sells it as such) with this wannabe Steinbeck flavor about the sorry sad life of the killer and ... Read More

The only book I could find that really focuses on the teen experience from the parent's perspective. It covers the phases a parent goes through emotionally from the onset of his or her child's symptoms until the illness is brought under control. It offers description of what bi-polar looks like in a teen that makes it easier to share with family what you as a parent are going through without having to discuss in detail the particulars of your child's situation.

Rereading this book after several years. Still a great book and much better than the TV version.

I originally read this way back in jr. high and sadly only remember being entranced by it--not recalling any of the plot. I finally got around to the rereading and recalled why I had the original feeling of enchantment. This is one good book. Kit Tyler is a sixteen-year-old girl who leaves Barbados after her grandfather's death for the more austere world of Puritan New England to say with her aunt's family. But Kit is completely unprepared for the ways of these people. Even so, she manages to grow in unimaginable ways as she connects with people with whom she would have never seen herself. And it's not a simple moralistic book. It's a book about a girl coming of age. My son is not even two yet and this is one of his favorites. I have read several "Proverbs" to him from the book every night for the past 6 months or so and now he asks for the book before nap time too! If I forget to read it to him before bed, he reminds me by saying "boys." The pictures are fabulous and because the proverbs are made into poems, it's appropriate for even very young little boys. I am thinking of buying a copy to take apart and frame some of the pictures (& poems) for his bedroom. If you're looking for a book that teaches great character, you've found it!

Wow. That was my first reaction on finishing this incredible book. Like many other fans of George's Lynley/Havers series, I was shocked when she killed off Thomas Lynley's wife Helen for no apparent reason. This story doesn't provide a reason - indeed, there are several questions left unanswered - but what it does provide is a detailed and searing look into the background of the supposed shooter. And yes, I said "supposed". I'm not going to insert a full spoiler here; I'll just leave you with that tantalizing hint. What this story also provides is proof - as if any were needed - that George can venture into fields other than mysteries and (British) police procedurals and still spin a ripping good yarn. It's so nice to read something to my daughter that I know is feeding her spiritually. She really connects with the illustrations, and loves to talk about what the girl in the story is doing. This book has naturally lead us into wonderful conversations about what it means to belong to God and what kind of habits we need to be forming as His children.
