Investigating the suspicious death of a journalist in technologically sophisticated modern Moscow, Gabriel Allon learns of the machinations of a former KGB colonel whose covert arms dealing business is part of a larger plot to reclaim the Russian empire and challenge the global dominance of the United States. BT.
I was not as awestruck as some in the latest Gabriel Allon novel, but I felt it was definitely fast and entertaining. This was not Silva's best in the series but it was still a fascinating ride. I was not satisfied with the less than stellar ending. I know...to be continued.

I heard Mr. Silva promoting his book on a radio show and although I've kind of burned out on the super-spy genre, the book was so highly recommended by the show's host, I thought I'd give it a read.

This is the first book by Mr. Silva that I've read, although this is the 7th(?) of the series so I came to this book not knowing the characters. Perhaps I'm just burned out on the genre, or maybe I hadn't developed loyalty to the characters that one might get after reading the series, but I just didn't get in to this book very much. It was a decent read and had some exciting parts, but it also had a number of moments of boredom that put it in the 3 star category with me. I can't really say what I objected to without spoiling things, but it seemed to me there were lots of loose ends, ... Read More

Fun, suspensful, till...(Spoiler alert) Would a German Sub captain who knows a thirty-foot boat is full of English MI-5 just fire a shot across its bows? Worse--a 195 foot English Navy Corvette, armed with a 100mm gun, a two-pound pom pom gun, two 20mm guns, and depth charges--when one of these sub killers sees a German sub on the surface, would it not poke a hole or two in it, preventing the escape of a couple German spies? Would it really only shoot machine guns at the spies on their diapidated fishing boat, while allowing their escape route to escape? Silva, get a grip. Put out a corrected edition.

(4.5 stars) The Leopard, an assassin who figures in a number of Silva novels, becomes a major player in this third Gabriel Allon novel, about the passive involvement of the Vatican in the Holocaust and its subsequent denial of all responsibility. Basing the novel on research by scholars like Susan Zuccotti (whom Silva credits in his acknowledgments) into the secret connections between factions within the Catholic Church and the Third Reich, Silva creates a chilling and utterly compelling story about the reasons that the Vatican might have feared the Jews were a threat to its own power and wanted to prevent the ultimate establishment of an Israeli homeland.

Gabriel Allon, an assassin for the Israeli Mossad (in his secret life) and a talented restorer of paintings and sculptures in Venice, ... Read More

... because you'll have to be a fan to get through this one.

The author no longer recounts in detail scenes from earlier stories or extensive character descriptions. This was a welcome change, but it did seem a bit ridiculous to find Gabriel Allon striding into the audience of the Pope without a little back story.

"The Messenger" was a disappointment after the cultural insight and emotional depths reached by Silva's writing in previous installments, "The Prince of Fire" and "A Death in Vienna." It felt like the sort of installment that's just meant to get the characters in position for the next (usually much better) volume.

That said, it did not make me any less likely to read the next volume.

This is one of my favorite Silva thrillers, primarily because of the subterfuge, chase, revelation, and respect between Silva's hero Gabriel Allon and the antagonist of this book, the English Assassin, who seems to serve as Allon's alter ego. The Englishman is a former British-government trained special ops soldier, now turned mercenary. The back-and-forth in scene and plot when Allon's and the Englishman's paths crisscross as they pursue their mutual targets reminded me of the chivalric rivalries between knights of disparate standards. You still get the same dependable, richly drawn Allon, but you have an added bonus of the Englishman's character, who draws on the reader's empathy as well.
As always, we are witness to fabulous settings and Allon's deep cultural angst leading to integrity and heroism. Don't ... Read More

I didn't get far with this story. When a bunch of unlikely conspirators from democracies and tyrannies meet in a luxury villa on a mountain top, indulge themselves inordinately, agree to kill a great many innocent men, women and children for their own profit, then leave and let the villa burn to the ground, I gave up and threw the book away. This author can write a good spy story, and has written several that are both gripping and sufficiently plausible, but this isn't one of them.

I have gained a an ever increasing respect for Holocaust survivors. I do not believe anyone can ever really begin to imagine the horrors of this period in history. Gabriel Allon learned of this first hand upon reading a manuscript, written by his mother, who was a physical survivor. The monstor who stripped her of everything except her moral courage is alive and Gabriel must bring him to justice.

Another great read from Daniel Silva. 5 stars.

A gripping tale with a likable hero, I recommend this book for travelers, insomniacs and vacationers. Daniel Silva has mastered the thriller style, knows how to keep his reader turning the pages, guessing and fearing and hoping.
