I don't think that I have ever read such a unique book. The Road is an amazing book that keeps you turning the pages without being a thriller or a mystery. It is also fun to analyze. I had read only two pages when I realized that this is one of those books that you have to read with a pencil in your hand. There are so many sentences to underline, words to circle, and places to add your own thoughts into the margines.

Riveting story and amazing writing. If you are looking for a happily ever after, this is NOT the book for you. The "man on the run" storyline hooks you and keeps you going. But what makes this book truly amazing is how McCarthy subtly shows how in 30 years (from the 1950's to the 1980's) how the world has drastically changed. Going from an age of Ozzie & Harriet and Leave it to Beaver where people thought saying "damn" was a swear word and no one felt the need to lock their doors. To a world where drugs, murder, sex, and violence are the norm.

McCarthy immediately pulls you into the story and into the character's lives. The ending (which is a somewhat different than the movie AND better than the movie) was fantastic. It doesn't end with everything neatly taken care of, ... Read More

I find it interesting that one reviewer entitled their review with a Slayer song and a Misfits song. Most people who've read this book would miss that referrence completely and I find it interesting because these bands are both giants of their industry who don't deserve the massive praise they get, so its ironic they're linked with this book. But that's music and this is a book. While Im not a real big fan of this book - it tends to plod along like a half dead horse staggering under the burden of an equally half dead man across the mexican desert - there is a quality about it that made me want to read more and left me feeling as if I'd learned something about life once I'd finished. If you like suffering you'll like this book. If you're one of those people who think reading great authors will make you ... Read More

Cormac McCarthy seems to be everywhere right now--Oprah's book club, a recent Coen Brothers film adaptation, one of the top novels of the past quarter-century. I decided it was time to check out his work, since he's considered the modern Faulkner, and a great depicter of the violent and beautiful American southwest. All the Pretty Horses both lives up to my expectations and kind of frustrates them. The novel starts out gloomy with the funeral for the protagonist John Grady's grandfather, turns comedic when Grady and his friend cross the border into Mexico in search of adventure, then shifts into a semi-melodramatic romance, finally returning to a state of pitch-black gloom and despair. All throughout, McCarthy retains a distance from the world of the novel, coldly surveying the raw beauty of the Mexican landscape ... Read More

I first was introduced to Cormac Mccarthy by way of "No Country for Old Men ", and loved his writing style, which led me to the border trilogy, which I also like a lot. Next I will read Blood Meridian. His style is unlike any other I have read.

In my opinion, this is Cormac McCarthy at his absolute finest. The story of Suttree, the homeless vagabond, is so utterly compelling that time just falls away as you're reading it. If you've never read McCarthy (*gasp!*), this would be a helluva great place to start. This story haunts me.

Volume II of The Border Trilogy, The Crossing is McCarthy's follow-up to All the Pretty Horses. The United States-Mexican border is the only recurring character from the previous volume, but the settings and themes are quite similar.

However, The Crossing is unlike its predecessor in the fact that while All the Pretty Horses followed a fairly linear story, The Crossing resembles exact life in that one never knows what the next day will bring and sometimes today's conflict has no resolution tomorrow. Nonetheless, we grow and learn from one day to the next, whether we intend to or not.

The Crossing begins with Billy Parham, a teenager, inexplicably deciding to return a captured pregnant wolf to Mexico and neglecting to inform his parents of the trip. The plight continues for such a lengthy ... Read More

"Child of God" is a story of a poor, lonesome and demented redneck named Lester trying to survive in a poor redneck town. From the beginning we see that he has gotten the boot from society (be it as it may) and has been forgotten and left on his own to survive and pursue his own interests, which are very sick and wrong. But he doesn't seem to realize he is doing anything wrong. I am not going to go into it but the thing is, as he hides from his pursuers living in caves, I root for him! I almost like him and find myself snickering at his horrific behavior!! What is wrong with me?

I think this is a good story. It contains a lot of contrasts, the actual plot is dark and there is evil and violence and desperation, but at the same time, there is humor and a little lightness and some action. If you like Cormac ... Read More

It's been a while since I've read good fiction, and it seems I've read some stinkers of late.

But I went back to McCarthy and was welcomed back to his violent Texas border town world with open arms.

John Grady and Billy Parham were each the focus in their respective narratives about them, The Crossing and All The Pretty Horses, and here's where they story ends, or what comes to be of these two cowboys.

They're together on a ranch, working as hands, and John Grady falls in love with a young Mexican prostitute, and this sets the back drop of what happens in the novel.

It's rare to laugh out loud at a book, but I did this several times while reading the exchanges between the two main characters and the other ranch hands. There' s a love between them, for what they do and what ... Read More

I have become a devoted McCarthy fan. I believe he is one of the most gifted, talented, honest and bravest authors on the scene today. This would be a great text for any high school, or college literature course because it would stimulate great dialog and teach students to become more reflective thinkers. He challenges the reader to think about some of life's biggest issues. Cormac has often been accused of revealing the darker side of the human condition. With this book I found myself laughing so hard I nearly fell off my chair, and then quickly found myself in a more solemn "Wow" moment, which is more the norm when reading Cormac. He has the gift of producing profound and wonderous moments for the reader. This is one of my favorites so far in my Cormac McCarthy journey.
