This is the first book I've read by this author. Mr. Moore is a cross between Carl Hiaasen, Stephen King and Timothy Leary during one of the professor's mind-altering drug experiments. Very, very funny metaphors are to be found throughout the story. I started laughing upon reading the author's dedication page which is certainly a first for me. I also cracked up upon reading the first paragraph of the story (32 words). At some points in the story, I had tears of laughter streaming down my face. Mr. Moore is truly an extremely creative and funny gentleman in a Charles Manson, helter-skelter sort of way. The book is sure to cause a few massive heart attacks in unsuspecting religious readers who live in the ole Bible Belt. I liked it a lot, but Mr. Moore's book is not for individuals who are easily offended.

Christopher Moore is at his best when he stretches himself. He can keep cranking out amusing books set in Pine Cove and San Francisco, and I will joyfully continue reading them. But it is the rarer and more challenging works (such as his prior novel LAMB) that I really look forward to with relish.

Fool is Moore's take on Shakespeare in general and King Lear in particular. Once again, Moore has set himself the challenge of finding the comedy in an epic tragedy. In Fool, now that I think of it, he uses a device similar to the one he used in LAMB--a charming and ridiculous narrator. This is Lear told from the point of view of the court jester, Pocket, a character as endearing as any that Moore has written. Through Pocket's eyes we learn more about the goings on in Castle Lear than we have been privy ... Read More

I read Dirty Job and finished it but didn't like it at all. My wife recently bought two more of Moore's books (thankfully at a bargain bin) without knowing how I felt about the author. I tried this one and it is worse than Dirty Job, it makes Dirty Job look like 1969 Woody Allen. In this book a bunch of slacker vampires and a bunch of slacker vampire hunters wander around not doing much of anything. It goes on and on. The reader yearns for something new and different like a plot or interesting characters. I gave up less than half way through and it is in my DNA to finish all books I start. Anybody want to buy the author's Sequined Nun book cheap? It's unread.

Set in Pine Cove, CA, Mr. Moore describes well and not a length (thank you) a sleepy little ex-whaling town. Each one of the characters is completely unique and the best ones are a little batty. And I mean that in the best way possible. It is the quirkiness and uniqueness of this cast of characters that really not only keeps the story interesting but turns it into a fast read.
With a shorter novel like this it's hard to give specifics without spoiling too much. The characters range from a people-eating demon named Catch, Travis- his keeper, a police detective, the bait store owner, a genie, a waitress and her alcoholic husband and much much more. Each character does have their background explained in a humorous way which is really what makes up the story. How this cast of characters came to be and how they eventually ... Read More

Christopher Moore has cornered the market on light religious satire with his "Lamb" and after having given this gift twice and losing a losing a third, loaned copy, it feels safe to say that if you're looking for a gift for someone with a sense of humor, shop no further. The book stands well on its own but the faux-bible cover and gilt page edges could easily make this one of the most prized elements of any home library. You WILL NOT be disappointed.

This was my second Moore book. The first was Lamb.
San Franciscan Charlie Asher is a Beta Male Widower who has just discovered that he is a death merchant. His daughter Sophie is his life. His lesbian sister won't stay out of his closet and the two people that work for him are an ex-cop with a penchant for Asian Transvestite Internet lovers and a Goth high school girl who doesn't go to school much at all, but instead steals Charlie's "How To" manual for death merchancy. And THAT is just the tip of this iceberg.
The Good: Well, Moore has done it again with his hilarious writing style. I mean, really, its laugh out loud funny and he always reminds me a bit of a supernatural/paranormal/off his rocker Hiaasen. I enjoy his liberal spray of swear words, and that he can take an honest look at the good in people in general. For every character ... Read More

Christopher Moore's Bloodsucking Fiends: A Love Story is the first book in the vampire series with C. Thomas Flood and Jody. It's too bad that I read You Suck: A Love Storyfirst. However, even though I knew what happened at the end of this book, it was still a great read.

***Spoiler Alert***

C. Thomas Flood arrives in San Francisco from Indiana with stars in his eyes about his future as a writer in the city after living in small town, unionized Indiana. He arrives and stumbles upon an apartment for $50 weekly and he shares his room with 5 Wongs. The funniest part of this living situation is that the Wongs are illegals seeking a way to become legal citizens of the United States. They leave bouquets on his bed unbeknowst to Tommy.

After running into the Emperor of San Francisco and his men (a golden retriever and a terrier), ... Read More

well, shoot.

christopher moore has risen to being favorite humorous fiction writer. i started with lamb, still in my list of favorite books. then i ventured into some of this other stuff (i've read fluke, the stupidest angel, you suck, and a dirty job, and loved them all).

this one was funny, to be sure. and no writer out there can match moore's absolute wackiness in characters and storylines.

but this one, unfortunately, was just too raunchy, over and over, for my enjoyment. maybe i'm puritanical; but it just didn't seem the raunchiness was necessary to the extent it was present.

this is one of his older books; so maybe i just need to stick to newer christopher moore books.
