If you collect Modern Foreign this book is a MUST HAVE, I have looked up 100 or more coins and have yet not to locate the coin I am looking for. It is comprehensive, has good pictures most of the Obverse and Reverse some just of the Obverse. I highly recommend this book, its great. David Jackson

I recently received my copy of the new 4th edition of the Krause-Mishler (KM) 18th century catalog. Here are my impressions of the book, with some emphasis on the changes from the 3rd edition. The photographs are definitely much better than in the last edition. Unfortunately, that may be the only improvement over the last edition I can think of. Some countries have been moved around - Vietnam is under "V" instead of "A" for Annam, Salzburg is back where it started under Austrian states, early Burma coins are no longer listed under Myanmar, and there's a new listing called "Central Asia" for Bukhara (formerly listed under Uzbekistan) and Janid Khanate (new?). Within several countries, the coins are no longer listed in the same order, and early Austrian coins have new KM numbers yet ... Read More

This formidable work manages to be comprehensive despite the scope and ambiguities of the period covered. The listings of coins themselves are in step with very recent numismatic discoveries. Accompanying photographs to many of the coinages are clear and fairly representative. Now, the length with which German issues are treated may surprise some, but this may be due to availability of records. Also, the prices quoted for most coins in general seem very approximate at best (particulary for issues from within many Spanish dominions), but this is only to be expected of a publication that must remain usable over several inflationary years. As a reference in identifying coins from the world of the 17th century, this Standard Catalog will stand one in good stead indeed!

for a 2006 edition this catalog is missing many many coins from previous years that one would expect to find. there are even missing items from before 2000! not very good for an edition that soppose to be 2006. in other cases, complete countries are missing like the new set from cocos islands with the 2004 set.

This is way more affordable and sufficient for the average coin collector who is interested in circulated coins of the world. Unless you want information on the modern commemoratives, this is the book for you. I just wish they made one like it for the 19th century as well.

Contrary to what is stated in the editorial review, this catalog does not include Philippine coins during the spanish colonial period. In fairness to the authors it is stated in the foreword that this catalog deals with Ibero-American coinage. Aside from that omission, this book is worth buying in the sense that if all you collect is Spanish/Portugese Colonial Coins you won't have to buy the Other Standard Catalogs that are divided into centuries as this catalog spans the entire timeline.
