I always love these stories but found this one to be overly contrived and totally unbelievable. The dialogue was poorly done and the character of Rachel was so self-assured I am not sure why she needed the FBI's help. During the gunfight at Slipper Hollow one character actually "laughed" as
he scooted along the floor to go get his gun...come on now you can do better than this. I did not finish the book.

Catherine Coulter is a great writer (in my opinion). She keeps the pace going and never lets the
story falter. I have enjoyed several of her books.

Picked up one of Coulter's books at lunch one day and liked it so much that I ordered the first four novels in these two volumes "The Beginning" and "Double Jeopardy". Am 3/4 of the way through and am not bored yet. Having just read a couple of Agatha Christie's in a row, I'd say these compare favorably in wit, plot and style. Good job, Ms. Coulter! I'm your newest fan!

It has been quite awhile since I ordered this book and my understanding is that Clearbook has had some problems with someone who stole their identity. They did email me back and I gave them my name & address but still have not received the book. I believe I said I would wait but over a month is too long. I may ask them for a refund or at least send me my book. I know it is not their fault but I had to email them to find out the status. Otherwise all of the other books I ordered came in a timely manner. Louise Heyza

I was going to write a fairly long review about this incredibly shallow and poorly-written book -- but I then discovered the review by General Crystal Starr Light "Galactic Empire". Every word that reviewer took the time to write is, as we used to say, "right on".

I would add one more stupidity -- when the police visit the apartment of Valerie Stryker, they enter her living room and see a white couch splattered with what appears at first to be brown paint -- but is later recognized as blood. Then her body is found behind the couch -- and she's been strangled. Hmmmmm. Where'd the blood come from, one wonders.

The incredible inconsistencies, lack of continuity and awful, awful childish dialog make this book good for little more than adding weight to a shelf.

This book was a huge disappointment - the ending left me feeling like I had just wasted hours of my life away.

At first, I enjoyed the plot and thought it had potential, and that's the only reason I kept reading...I was excited to see how she would tie it all together. But she never did. It was just a big waste.

I've read some of Coulter's historical romance novels, and enjoyed them, but this is not one of her better efforts. I'm halfway through the book, and am persisting only to find out the solution to the mystery. The characterizations are inconsistent--at times, characters change attitudes practically mid-sentence. I half-expect the villains to be wearing top hats, capes, and twirling black mustaches. The dialogue is amateurish and silly. I know that she has re-written other books of hers, and I think that this one needs the same treatment, because it reads like a book written by an adolescent who only imagines what adults say and do. I will probably try one more in this series to see if the books improve, but not until I "cleanse my palate" with a few other books. ETA: I have now finished it, and the ending ... Read More

Savich and Sherlock are back to help Ford MacDougal, who appeared in THE MAZE, find his missing sister who had driven off a cliff in Oregon.
Events are compelling, bazaar and fast paced but character development is static. At times it seems as if one is reading the same story over and over.
Nash Black, author of TRAVELERS and SINS OF THE FATHERS.
