Hemingway said all American writing comes from one book, Huck Finn. Wrong! He also believed himself a better writer than Fitzgerald. Wrong! I'm no literary expert, I haven't gone to Harvard or Yale or any of those overpriced universities for spoiled rich kids but in my expert opinion all American literature: rhythm, length, flow, syntax, form, etc., came from one book & this is it. Henry Miller was spot-on when he said America has only produced one great writer & that is Walt Whitman. If you are a student of Abraham Lincoln your education is not complete without having read Sandburg's Lincoln. Yes, it is poetic. Yes, he strays into myth making and telling. Even so, it is a masterpiece.

My wife and I love and highly recommend Carl Sandburg's other book "The Wedding Procession of the Rag Doll and the Broom Handle". This is a picture book that is very funny, and was one of her favorite books growing up as a kid. Rootabaga stories doesn't have any pictures, and is a bit strange. Don't get me wrong, the author is brilliant and the writing is interesting, but it wasn't a fun kid's book like we were expecting.

Sandburg's 'Lincoln' is exhaustively researched, and magnificently illuminating. The photographs and illustrations in this edition add admirably to the prose. I feel all the more that Lincoln stands alone as the greatest political leader of all time. No one else (not even Gandhi) was even close. The Emancipation Proclamation was the greatest political act in human history.

I'm sorry but NO one can make me laugh like Carl Sandburg, the poet. It is like the triple-distilled essence of middle-brow, middling, mediocre 'portentousness'. Every word, every phrase, every comma drips with Importance, Seriousness, Meaning, and The Nobleness of the Common Man. His world is stupid, simple and phony - thoughts and perceptions all smoothed into a digestible pablum. I cannot hate the man because he is the most SINCERE phony ever (well maybe Allan Ginsberg is a close second). He loved being photographed and would put on the most sickeningly far away look at the drop of a hat. It is almost endearing. And before anyone jumps all over me, I'm not an academic and elitist. People trying to find great folk songs with both wit and wonder and laughter, heart ache and beauty probably have been doing this since Sandburg published this book in the 1920s.
