4 1/2 stars, really, but we can't do that. This is the original 1855 version. Whitman added to the collection throughout his life, ending up with an overstuffed and very uneven "deathbed" version, which is better known. There are some good poems in it which aren't in the original, such as When Lilacs Last in the Door-yard Bloom'd, but there's a lot of pretty weak stuff, too. The 1855 has a small number of pretty consistently excellent poems which are highly original and loosely but definitely connected. Reading it is a very different experience from wading through the bloated, inconsistent final version - there's something Whitmanesque (i.e., at it's best) about the original collection as a unit. Anytime I order from Amazon, I throw one of these in my cart for a last minute new baby, birthday or teacher gift. It is a wonderfully diverse selection of poems, often read by the poets themselves. How cool is it to hear Robert Frost in a scratchy rendition of "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening"? My 4th grader was thrilled when his class read a Janet Wong poem, and he could tell them about how she came to write it, (track 29). I was thrilled that I could then give his teacher a gift she could use in class -- they were all thrilled to hear the poem read by the poet. With 95 poems from 73 poets, the book is a great value, but add the cd with the poets themselves and it is, well, priceless.

This was my first and best introduction to contemporary American poetry, something I'd been dreading since enrolling in the graduate-level poetry course that used it as a textbook. Collins was twice named Poet Laureate (from 2001, when this book was published, through 2003) with good reason. His language is contemporary and his images are complex but extremely accessible. The book is both a "greatest hits" anthology with selections from four prior books released over a ten year span, and a collection of 20 new works. Reading his words doesn't feel like "reading poetry." Although there's little in the way of traditional poetic forms, it's not a free verse free-for-all. Billy Collins is the most accessible of poets. People who "like" poetry but never actually read it will readily become addicted to him. I would start with "The Lanyard" or "The Revenant." You won't be able to put the book down.

Frankly, when I finished Billy Collins' introduction, which discussed the deficiencies in our system of teaching poetry in the U.S., I felt that I had my money's worth! It was an excellent explanation of why we all avoided poetry in our early years instead of embracing it. Obviously, I enjoyed the poems which were included but the intro really grabbed me from the gitgo. Rammy

My review is for those who aren't big poetry buffs. For those of us who think poetry could very well be a dead art or something only intellectuals would enjoy. A friend started sending me poems by Billy Collins and I enjoyed them so much I bought The Art of Drowning. His writing is so accessible to our modern sensibilities and resonate with our day to day lives. Check out "Days". The words he chose and rhythms he created really drew me in. Hope you enjoy all the poems in this book as much as I did.
