I have read many of Ben Williams' works, including Pointing Dog Journal articles, Wingshooter's Guides, and other books, but I still have yet to find what all the praise is about. Sure, I'm envious that he spends 200 days a year afield. With that, any decent dog should be good. Williams' text is thin on substance and speaks in generalities that common sense tells one. His voice has no flow, a point which is worsened when the editors make breaks between the paragraphs. The editors also have other faults which shouldn't be shouldered by Williams ("chuckar" and "chukar" listed on facing pages). Several Wilderness Press books were written by the author or his hunting buddies. The latter is the case with "Western Wings". So it goes without saying that is no classic of upland bird hunting, but rather a loosely organized collection of hunting tales and observations of your average Western bird hunter. Williams does do a good job of describing the behavioral patterns of birds throughout the days and the seasons, and dispels some common myths about prairie gamebirds (e.g. "huns always flush wild in the late season"). You get the impression he knows his bird dogs, although he does does not really delve into the subject. This is a great book for anyone interested in bird dogs, especially Brittanys. Most of Mr. Williams books that I have read have been instructional whereas this book is a more personal story about his favorite dog Winston and his performance in the field. It is right up there with "The Rufus Chronicle". I just recently got a Brittany from the American Brittany Rescue and have not hunted him and actually haven't been hunting since I was a little girl with my dad. However, after reading Mr. William's book I have had the urge to get out there and try with my very first dog. This is a must read for Brittany lovers!
