"Photography (9th Edition)" is perfect for any kind of photographer, whether it's someone who is picking up a camera for the first time or someone who is much more experienced. From the seemingly endless supply of information to the immense number of beautiful photographs, there is nothing this book doesn't cover.

It is thorough and very detailed. The book provides images and explanations of film processing, charts of indicated exposures in particular lighting situations, and also illustrates composition and framing. It even has a chapter devoted to the history of the photography. A very important aspect to know, however, is "Photography" leans toward black and white 35 mm film photography. Knowing how to use a camera manually is an important technical and creative aspect ... Read More

Purchased this book for a photo class I'm taking at our local Jr. College. The book is very informative. I highly recommend this book for the biginner photographer. It gives lots of information on basic camera operation and photo taking and developing.

Books : A Short Course in Photography: An Introduction to Black and White Photographic Technique (4th Edition)
The book itself isn't bad. As a matter of fact, the illustrations and example photographs are excellent. But this is a VERY short course in photography. Most topics are covered in just enough detail to get you started, but there's really not enough here to really learn from without a lot of experimentation. A better bet is Photography" (7th edition). It is much more complete, has the same type of illustrations (it's from the same publisher) and covers all types of photography in detail. It's a little pricier, but you get so much more in "Photography" that this book is pretty much unnecessary if you have it.

I was very excited to see that there was a new collection of Sam Taylor-Wood's work available. Unfortunately, this book is extremely disappointing. There are nearly as many pages of text as there are photographs, and very little of Taylor-Wood's work is included. Although the book is inexpensive, you are basically only getting about 20 full page pictures, another 20 pages of tiny pictures on the page with a lot of negative space, and another 10 pages of something in between.

Books : Bill Viola: Installations and Videotapes
Bill Viola rules my dreams. The exhibition at the Whitney stunned me and it stayed with me for a long time. I wish there were more images from his notebooks in this collection since the display of notes/inspirations were as fascinating as the installations themselves. You might have seen some of his work featured in the recent Nine Inch Nails US tour. If you want to see the zenith of video/installation art, you must spend some time with Bill Viola's work. (He's also a delight to meet).
