The publication of Anne Rice's (b. 1941) memoir coincides with the tenth anniversary of her return to faith and the Catholic church on December 6, 1998. Rice's twenty-five novels of fantasy, vampires, witches and the occult, not to mention homoeroticism and sadomasochism, have sold upwards of 100 million books, so many of her fans were stunned to read a Newsweek article (October 31, 2005) in which she vowed that henceforth she would "write only for the Lord. Ready to do violence to my career. . . I consecrated myself and my work to Christ." She's made good on her promise, having published two books of a trilogy about Jesus -- Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt (2005) and Christ the Lord: The Road to Cana (2008). Some diehard fans have wondered if Rice will ever return to the books that made her ... Read More

Anne Rice has painted a picture of Christ that might give us an insite into the times of his life. It is interesting how she incorporated the life and times of the Jewish culture along with the birth of my Christian faith.

This book started out really well, but halfway through, I found it lacking in excitement and story line...Although the research involved in this book appears to be extensive, it looses a little bit of the story line, focusing too much on Jesus thoughts...Not a bad read, just a little slow..

The plot and characters are very well done. The only draw back is that there is too much time spent describing people places or things, and that everyone in her stories are latent homosexuals. While I am gay, the over abundance of homosexuality amongst the male characters made it seem unnatural and made me wonder a bit about the writer.

I read this book only twice in my life - the last time being, well, over five years ago. But I can deliciously recall many details from Anne's first book in the Vampire Chronicles INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE.
It's hard to think of the many reasons I would recommend this or any of her other books that tell the story of one of her many alluring vampires, but I fail in doing so even in my own mind for simply put I haven't even the vaguest words to describe how sensationally rewarding it is to be involved with any of her novels. Her portrayals of vampires and their existence in our modern world isn't vulgar nor is it entirely fantastical. I believe the reason so many fall victim to her eloquent prose is that her characters -even through immortality - are still relatable to every reader. They are beings you would want to ... Read More

Books : The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty
I read some of the bad reviews before I purchased this book. I realized some people claimed this book was nothing but generic porn, but considering it was written by Anne Rice, I thought the book must have some redeeming qualities. I was wrong. Anne Rice took a beautiful fairytale and turned it into a grotesque display of homo/heterosexual brutality. I almost feel embarassed for Mrs Rice and wonder what drove her to write such complete and utter drivel. Spankings, spankings and more spankings! Black, white, gold paddles. Spankings for punishments, spankings as rewards, spankings just for the heck of it! If I wasn't so disgusted with this book, I would actually laugh.

But what really disturbed me is that all these Princes and Princess that the Queen and her Princes keep for their own sexual amusement are mere children. ... Read More

I have a love/hate relationship with Anne Rice's books. This one falls into the latter category.

Where to begin? Well, to start with, it took me over a week to read. Granted, it's over 1000 pages long, but that normally doesn't happen. It should have taken 3 days, maybe 4. Too bad I'm unable to put a book down once I've started reading it.

It's the start of the Witches of Mayfair series, about a family of witches, and the main story, to the extent there is one, is about the most recent descendant coming into her inheritance, but it's nothing as straightforward as that. Not even close.

I'll try to synopsize. Rowan Mayfair is a brilliant neurosurgeon, with a magic sense that, combined with her medical experience, allows her to know which seemingly hopeless cases can be cured. She was adopted at birth ... Read More

I had peeked at these novels for years while browsing bookstores but finally had the nerve to purchase the first one about a year ago. Within a week, I owned all three. While I thoroughly enjoy reading good erotica, too many authors offer the same dialog and plots that are extremely unimaginative, trite, or downright ridiculous. It almost seems like sex is joke in such novels. I found nothing like that in the Sleeping Beauty novels. You can't describe these books with words like "steamy" or "hot." The sex depicted in the plot comes from deep down inside a person who finds freedom in submission, where their bodies only exist as means to serve and pleasure another. It is more spiritual and mental than it is physical. The characters are extremely well-written, their personalities and histories are just as important as the acts they participate ... Read More

I confess, I didn't make it very far into this book. Anne's battle with christian bs really shows with this entry into her once interesting if not fascinating vampire series. It's sad how she regressed from her intriguing pre-jesus vampire mythology going back to ancient Egypt to the same old god devil jews and their damn bible Bermuda triangle. Oh well. Pandora I think came after this and is surprisingly good. Go figure. Now she's all about the big J

I will endeavour to put my disappointment in this book into words.

In my opinion Anne Rice seems to have no direction to her writing of the New Vampire Chronicles, it is the only conclusion I can make. I kept reading them hoping against hope that after such a long time between the original series and the current one, she just need time to get herself fully immersed in that world again. However, this book just blew that grace period out the water and confirms what I have suspected for a long time; this new series is junk.

I cannot believe I wasted good money on this book; the central character (Quinn Blackwood) is a spineless fop who forns over his grandmother (there was a ridiculously lengthy description of her) and has the really annoying habit of falling in love with anything that moves. His character is not even remotely ... Read More
