For a long time, I have wanted to read this 1852 classic, "Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds", but why I decided to do so recently, was because I was hoping to get some insights into understanding our recent Housing bubble and 2007-8 financial meltdown. I am glad I read it, because I did indeed come away with some 'extraordinary' insights.

Sure, this book goes into some historic financial bubbles, like Tulipmania, the South Sea Bubble, and the Mississippi land scheme. But, when it got into other manias involving witches, the Crusades, alchemy, popularity of certain phrases/expressions, fortune tellers, slow poisoners, duels, admiration of thieves, haunted houses, etc., it awakened me that our financial meltdown wasn't simply a repeat of other financial ... I bought this book in 1999 and read it annually. I always laugh out loud and recommend it to everyone I meet who is not and does not want to be an "expert" in the market but does want honest, forthright, expert advise on what's what in personal finance and investments. I re-read it recently and 10 years after it's release it's still dead on. I hope he updates it again soon cause the internet is even better than it was when he wrote this and there are even more investment "schemes" out there to AVOID!

The Best Little Boy in the World (TBLBITW) was the first memoir of a LGBT individual I read and it was well worth the read. Andrew Tobias tells his story in a witty, sarcastic and humorous tone that makes the book one you can't put down. LGBT individuals are sure to relate to at least some aspects of Tobias's life. Non-LGBT individuals will be able to learn a bit about the struggles and costs of living a closeted life and the experience of coming out to friends and family. The best part is this book rarely takes on a serious tone which would be disruptive to its flow and make it less accessible to some readers. I highly recommend readers read TBLBITW and then the sequel, TBLBITW Grows Up, where Tobias discusses his life since publishing the TBLBITW and discusses some areas in the original that were altered ... I found "The Best Little Boy in the World Grows Up" well-written, insightful and inspiring. I am a straight female and don't usually read a lot of material about gay men, nor do I read a lot of biographies (boring). So why did I read this in the first place? Actually, because I liked "The Only Investment Guide You'll Ever Need" so much.

The investment guide was invaluable to me when I inherited some money and had no clue what to do next. That book transformed me rather rapidly from someone who felt like she needed help but was not even sure where to turn, to feeling that I could handle things just fine on my own, and it's working out very well for me. In addition to being useful, I found that book so well-written and just plain entertaining that I have re-read it several times and started looking ... Read More

If the name of Charles Barsotti sounds familiar, it's because he does business cartoons for the New Yorker, and has produced such for over three decades. Any New Yorker reader only has to take a glance at the cover to readily recognize his style, and FROM THE BIG DESK OF... represents the first gathering of Barsotti creations under one cover. Dilbert fans will find plenty to applaud here, in a hilarious series of comments on the corporate ladder's ironies.

Books : My Vast Fortune: An Investor's Fiscal Triumphs and Money Misadventures
This book was rather dissatisfying because it didn't spend nearly enough time talking about how he made his money (short answer: he is a best selling financial-advice author and leveraged that fame to selling financial software = royalties!).

The book spends most of its time on a rambling (was there an editor??) account of his mis-dealings in real estate and social causes.

Definitely NOT a how-to book, I didn't find it as entertaining as a memoir either.

However, I *am* a fan of Tobias, and think his "Only Investment Guide" book is rather good.
