This book kept me engaged to see what "diffrent" thihg would happen next. While not great writing, it is vivid and depicts things most of us can hardly imagine.

In this non-fiction novel, Fuller somberly tells the story of an unsung American hero, a young oil drill rig worker; one of many who support this country's oil industry. You might call this a true crime novel--the crime being capitalistic greed and unfair treatment of workers; or you might call it a modern western for all the broad sweeping Wyoming landscapes, and the timeless struggle of its inhabitants ("who appear as tiny dots against the great swell of land") to work and prosper.

Getting into this book was really slow. It was kind of like watching a boring documentary...There is no plot focus at first, just short snippets of people and scenery. And I couldn't get past the pretentious writing. We are told Colton had a walk "like he had never really found the difference ... Read More

I liked this as a follow up to her original! It was very informative of how african soldiers lived etc. I listened to both on audio and was pleasantly surprised at a cold pick I had chosen!

Much of the story seems trite to a 21st century reader because its major plot points have been copied so many times in modern movies and books. For example, I was groaning when the main characters realized they could impress their captors by predicting the sky would grow dark -- i.e., solar eclipse would occur, and they had an almanac to tell them when. How many times has this trick been used? Regardless, the book is a great read, and one has to give credit to Haggard for creating so many enduring concepts. It's fast-paced and very hard to put down.

An interesting side note is how harsh Haggard (via the characters) was in his treatment of black Africans as well as animals, but I suppose that was commonplace for the era when the book was written. For example, the characters don't have any qualms ... Read More

5.To the Wedding by: John Berger

Berger's To the Wedding magically extends the author's critical vision which he has elaborated in both Ways of Seeing and On Looking. In those essay collections, Berger establishes himself as a champion of creative looking - looking as a way of gleaning knowledge, beauty and understanding. To the Wedding is narrated by a blind peddler of tamata, stamped metal charms, who is tied to two of his customers, a father and daughter, by a gift of intimate vision. He is the omniscient narrator, a blind man who has a keen cinematic sense, and his focus is on the unfolding life of the daughter, Ninon and her lover Gino. They are shown navigating a landscape of love and loneliness, confronting the tragic nearness of death, learning to trust and retain hope, and experiencing the great festive release of the titular celebration. ... Books : Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight
Alexandra Fuller tells a story about growing up in farms in Zimbabwe as it became independent and then in Malawi as her parents worked to make a living among expats and natives. She went to a white school which emptied out of the white students at independence and then filled with the black children of the neighborhood. They had a servant who was a gifted tracker. She was invited into the home of a very poor black family. As a child she was able to see and do things the adults couldn't. Alexandra has a wonderful recall of the details of childhood.
Lisette Lecat has a perfectly clear and delightful voice with a British accent that makes hearing the details a pleasure.

Books : Don't Let's Go to Dogs Tonight: An African Childhood
fuller's memoir is a tough but beautiful look at the hard-scrabble life of growing up as a white colonial daughter-of-an-alcoholic-mother in war-torn african states. i wouldn't recommend this book to my grandmother or great aunt - the tone is certainly a bit in-your-face with its frequent references to alcoholism, lost babies, and constant injuries. nonetheless fuller seems simply honest, steadfastly direct rather than delicate, and while walking a tiptoe line of creating shock in the reader, it never solidly dives over the line into gratuitous violence, admirably keeping some distance as the matter-of-fact observations of a child. i found it very well-written, and very hard to put down. if the tone sounds too strong for you, try the older "flame trees of thika" series, which also make fascinating comparisons to fuller ...
