A reader, who is unfamiliar with the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series, to his own detriment, may pick up one of these books and dismiss it based on its marketing or cover. After all, it is natural to judge books by their covers. It is sold as a mystery book but I am not sure if that is the best categorization for these delightful books. Blue Shoes and Happiness, like the rest of the books in the series, will not disappoint readers. It is simple, yet filled with wisdom and author's wit and humor. Blue Shoes deals with many issues from black mail to dieting and shopping. I am amazed how much is packed in this fairly short book that can be read in one day. This was the first book in this series that I have read. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The plot is exciting but relaxing to enjoy, and there are so many subplots that make it truly fun. The gentle, eye-opening descriptions of a truer Africa were fascinating to me. I heartily recommend this book!

This was the first book in this series that I have read. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The plot is exciting but relaxing to enjoy, and there are so many subplots that make it truly fun. The gentle, eye-opening descriptions of a truer Africa were fascinating to me. I heartily recommend this book!

These books are not serious fiction, finely constructed mysteries or the greatest books ever written on Africa. Instead, they are a quiet, gentle and heartwarming series of vignettes that provide insight into the human condition and a peak at the Africa of Botswana. Further, they are not entirely saccharine either as they touch on issues such as domestic violence and the trials and tribulations of serious poverty. Yet at the end of each of these books, I always feel better. This is a rare combination indeed. I tend to read what most people would consider "serious" fiction and nonfiction. You will more often than not find me curled up with something by Camus, Nietzsche or Borges. Rose-colored glasses are not my style and it took an insistent friend to get me to read this first volume. Third in the No. 1 Ladies' Detective series. Mma. Makutsi plays a more important part in this book. When Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni suddenly loses interest in his shop, Mma. Makutsi gets yet another promotion, to acting manager. She does a great job, managing to motivate the two lazy apprentices while also earning a large fee for the detective agency. Meanwhile, Mma. Ramotswe tries to help Mr. J.L.B. Motekoni conquer his bout of depression. She reads everything she can find on the subject and also enlists the aid of the woman who runs the orphan farm.

Book five in The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series. Mma Potokwani ropes Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni into agreeing to do a parachute jump in order to raise money for the orphan farm. In one of my favorite quotes from the book, she says, "We are much cleverer than you men, but, unfortunately, you do not know that." Ha! Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni is so preoccupied with trying to find a way to avoid keeping his promise that he can't spare a minute to think about getting married, much to Mma Ramotswe's chagrin. Mma Ramotswe helps a woman who owns a chain of hair salons to investigate several prospective husbands. As always, things work out just fine in the end.

This first came to my attention as an audiobook. I was checking out the public library for suitable listening material for my two youngest children, and noticed this intriguing title on the adults' audiobook shelf. Hmmm. What on earth could a book with such a title be about? Well, one way to find out, and fortunately it's free at the library, so I took it home with me. Two chapters later and I was hooked on the #1 Ladies' Detective Agency. Incidentally, if you have not yet heard the audiobook, I recommend it, too. It's read by Lisette Lecat, a talented South African actress who does all the voices and accents, making you feel as if you were really there.
