Brave New World takes place in a utopian London around the year 2540, which started with a good idea, but went way wrong. Humans are produced in large numbers in a high-tech factory without the filth of viviparous reproduction. The babies produced are organized into five castes and are conditioned specifically to do their part in maintaining their society. As the reader progresses farther into the story, they find out what is sacrificed for the stability of the utopian world they occupy, when the reader explores this world through the mind of a man named John, who has not been conditioned to accept this world that suppresses the emotions we value so much today. John comes from a "savage" reservation in New Mexico; where the humans remain that practice our modern day culture. With advances ... Read More

Like Douglas Hofstadter three generations later, Aldous Huxley is in awe of the complexities of the human mind. Just like Hofstadter, he too is a compassionate and astute observer of what the mind can accomplish when given full and free-reign. He is also a teacher like Hofstadter with the single purpose of conveying what he has learned to later generations. But unlike Hofstadter whose writings seek to soothe our fears, Huxley perhaps unwittingly, heightens them.

Huxley's writings have shocked and informed us for the better part of a century. His relaxed, clear, almost laconic style can be disarming. Yet, lurking behind this easygoing persona and writing style are always truths so devastating that we ordinary "socially adjusted" humans still have great difficulty getting our minds around ... This novel is provocative. Why? For one, what do you think of genetically enhancing embryos? And technology interfering with human life?

The story centers around Bernard Marx, a man who doesn't fit into his strictly controlled world. Although he is regarded as one of the special ones (An Alpha) he's not happy. He goes on vacation to New Mexico, (a non-chemically-controlled state) with Lenina, a woman who likes things the way they are.

A man arrives on an Island to engineer an oil deal. He begins to like the place. It is a nice place. But one of the old money family wants to sell it out for greater access to the contents of a Sears-Roebuck catalog. In the end evil triumphs because good is pacifist and big oil money can buy more guns.

This book, published first in 1945, is an amazing compilation of writings from eastern and western mystics and religious practitioners. Mr. Huxley does an excellent job of organizing the quotations and providing commentary. The selections he chose both 1) provide clues to breakthroughs in understanding and in compassion and: 2) challenge each of us to think, live and speak with humility, even if that periodically upsets our present and constraining understandings of life, each other and ourselves.

This book was chosen by our regular weekly church seekers' group, and it has taken us by surprise with its insights and challenges.

6.Brave New World by: Aldous Huxley

Books : Brave New World
This remarkable book was written around 1931. As far as I know it is the earliest of the modern dystopia novels ("1984", "Fahrenheit 451"). Read carefully . . . .

It is a story, centered in London, of a world where life is lived out in controlled, contented bliss. Genetic engineering contributes to a smoothly functioning caste system. Sexual promiscuity is the norm, even instilled in children. Birth control is the norm. Behavior altering drug use is the norm. Physical attractiveness is at a premium and youth is artificially preserved. Materialistic consumption is prized. Entertainment occupies non-work hours but does NOT include reading. Independent thinking is unacceptable. "God" has been replaced by "Ford", literally (science and industry!, not superstition).

I started out with Huxley's Perrenial Philosophy and am 3/4 of the way through Huxley and God. The effect these two books have had on my way of thinking about most anything religious or spiritual, and matters of daily existence and reality can't be understated. If asked what my belief is about God, I would recommend that someone read both of these books. No one in my mind has written about God, Godhead, the Divine Ground and our times existant relation to that reality better than Aldous Huxley. I found my self completely awed by what and how he describes the things he does. He makes so much sense out of really complicated verse and Mystical thought, and always has really profound insights to all that he discusses, which is immense. I hope more people find these books and have the same appreciation that I do for Mr. Huxley. ... Read More

Do not be fooled by the table of contents. Even though it says the book contains "The Doors of Perception" and "Heaven and Hell," it in fact only contains a few brief pages of abridgement. That warning to the buyer aside, the book does contain an interesting array of letters regarding the same experience recounted in "Doors of Perception" and many other trips that Huxley took. Particularly useful are the historical introductions to the letters collected in this volume. It allows the casual reader to know what events are being discussed in the letter.

Aldous Huxley's 1928 novel opens with a grand London party given by Lady Edward Tantamount. Music plays. Dozens of characters cross the stage, meet briefly, argue, and part. Some go on to a restaurant that stays open past midnight; there, they meet still more characters and argue some more; several of them continue to yet another party in the early hours of the morning. We are now 100 pages into the book, a quarter of the way through. The numerous characters will continue to bump into each other over the next days and months, but the essential texture of the opening will not change.

If you Google the title, the question comes back "Did you mean Point Counterpoint?" Well, no. Counterpoint is a musical term implying line and movement: two or more voices, intertwining with one another, echoing, developing, but never standing ... Read More

This is an enjoyable read. Huxley is strong on his philosophical ideals and he moves (sometimes pushes) the story at hand in a certain direction specifically to go on a 10 page rant regarding those ideals. Its definitly worth reading, especially if find it interesting when authors write books about the future that actual come quite true in the decades ahead. I suggest reading this 3rd if you plan to read several of his books...definitly hit up Brave New World, and move to something wild then to this one.
