I have used one of these for at least the last ten years, and it is the closest shave you will ever get by yourself. Keep in mind that this is a straight forward razor and when you start using it, it shaves alot closer than normal-learn to shave all over and enjoy the best shave you will ever have. As for the price, I do believe I paid the same for it ten years ago, no price increase, and a pack of blades can last two months easy.

There's nothing particularly wrong with Merkur blades, but they don't provide enough of a positive difference over the competition to be worth the extra cost. These are very basic razor blades, selling on Amazon for between $.50 - $.75 per blade. You can get Derbys for $.20 (100-pack for $20, with Amazon's free shipping), or get a pack of generic blades from Walgreen's, Wal-Mart, or any local pharmacy (almost all generic brand blades in the US are made by the American Safety Razor Company, and are surprisingly effective) for between $.15 (Wal-Mart) and $.35 (Walgreens) a blade. And if it's quality you're after, you should be using Feather or Swedish Gillettes. I have used Merkur, and they provide a fine shave, but there are cheaper solutions that do as good of a job.

I used the Merkur Super blades for awhile, and they were OK, but they don't compare well to Feather blades. The Feathers are sharper allowing for a closer shave with less irritation. I decided to give these 4 stars because I haven't found anything that beats them other than the Feather.

I just love the form factor of this razor. It is simply a beautifully engineered device whose form compliments its unparalleled function. This razor is perfect for my style of shaving. It is VERY forgiving allowing a neophyte such as myself to obtain a near perfect BBS shave out of the gates. I realize there are those who prefer a more aggressive razor. This is my first double edge safety razor. I have had a difficult time shaving ever since I began growing a beard. I get razor rash, razor burn and irritation like you wouldn't believe. I've tried dry shaving, shaving before I shower, shaving after I shower, etc, etc. I've tried electric razors, disposable razors, 3 blade, 4 blade and even 5 blade razors. Having shaved with everything from cheapo disposables to Thiers-Issard straight razors, I have to say that the Merkur Progress is probably the best all-around razor available today. It has excellent heft and balance, and the adjustment feature is simple and straightforward. (Although I do agree that the numbered adjustment seems to perform a little differently depending on the blade used.) It is easy to keep clean--assuming you don't mind unscrewing it and taking the blade out to wipe off the head and frame. Having also used a venerable old Gillette "fat boy" from the 1950s, I'd still have to rate the Progress as a better razor; the screw operated adjustment makes it constantly adjustable, not just in steps.
