Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - gritty and well-written
I bought this for my husband and immediately was HOOKED. A somewhat realistic look at the gold rush/frontier. The language is bad, but VERY well-written plots and believable characters. We both are looking forward to Season 2.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A true "HBO Original" - Ignore the complaints
I notice several people complaining in reviews about the profane language used in Deadwood. Deadwood is one of the most compelling TV shows ever created. It is full of interesting characters, a mix of drama and humor, amazing costumes, and beautiful photography. It is luscious, intriguing and gritty. And yes, profane. The odd mixture of gutter and intellect appeals to me and many others who usually do not watch television.

If you don't like the profanity, don't worry, they made a Western for you. It was Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The Real West
Deadwood is a cold eyed accurate portrayal of life in the "West", specifically South Dakota and its territories prior to official statehood. It is raw, crude, and messy much like life itself at that time. The brilliance comes from the writing and the acting. All of the characters are multidimensional which makes them believable. The actors are clearly loving the roles and doing an excellent job of bringing these people to life. Many have criticized the language as overly crude. According to historians, the language used is accurate which negates the idea that it is used for shock affect. I would highly recommend this series to anyone who has an interest in U.S. History, Westerns, and good story telling.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Delicious twist on the dusty old western!
I love this HBO series about the late 1800 mining boom town of the same name. It turns around the cloying Hollywood version of the old west and spices it up with vulgar language. This show probably has more in common with The Sapranos then Stagecoach. I enjoy how it does the unexpected. I have a feeling this show has more in common with the real Deadwood then any of the past Hollywood incarnations. . .

Oh yeah! Check out "BROKEN TRAIL" for a western that does not follow genre norms!
