Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Exposes the Liars and Hypocrites
One of the book's most significant contributions to the task of combating disinformation is its straightforward case for the invasion of Iraq based on intelligence information that was available to Democratic leaders in 2003. In response to the "Bush lied and people died" rhetoric, which has supplanted political discourse these days, the authors dissect the hypocrisy of Democrats and the counterfeit logic of the far left.

It is undisputed that leading Democrats, including Clinton, Gore and Kerry, acknowledged before the war that Saddam Hussein posed a growing security threat to the West and advocated his removal. The rationale for the invasion is codified in the Joint Resolution to Authorize the Use of U.S. Armed Forces Against Iraq, passed on October 22, 2002 (with 29 Democratic senators voting "aye"), which states in pertinent part:

"Iraq both poses a continuing threat to the national security of the United States and international peace and security in the Persian Gulf region and remains in material and unacceptable breach of its international obligations by, among other things, continuing to possess and develop a significant chemical and biological weapons capability, actively seeking a nuclear weapons capability, and supporting and harboring terrorist organizations. . ."

The evidence before members of Congress, based on a consensus of available intelligence, supported the claim that Iraq posed a threat to regional stability and U.S. national interests. This assessment was uncontroversial and well documented at the time, which is why Congress gave its approval for the war. Furthermore, the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998, which passed by unanimous consent in the Senate and was signed by Bill Clinton, made it the stated policy of the United States "to support efforts to remove the regime headed by Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq and to promote the emergence of a democratic government to replace that regime."

The book documents how, shortly after the successful invasion of Iraq, Democrats started to adopt the conspiratorial claims of radicals like Code Pink and set out to undermine the nation's support for the war. Realizing that victory in Iraq would be the worst thing to happen to the Democratic party since McGovern's election debacle and feeling pressure from its anti-American wing, the same folks who voted for the war suddenly turned against it and began to demonize Bush. Since things like patriotism, our national interest and confronting the unpleasantness of a hostile world are loathed by the left because they impede the fantasy of a socialist utopia, it did not take much effort for liberals to call for the prosecution of Cheney while referring to the "insurgents" in Iraq who were murdering civilians as "freedom fighters."

It is a much needed outline of the reasons for the administration's actions, the viciousness of the attacks that supporters of the war have had to endure and the vacuousness of liberal counter-arguments.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - WOW !!!
What an eye opening book about the people who would like to run this country. Amazing.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Very well done and supported exposition of how the left is attacking the nation
This relatively slim volume is an important book. Its theme is "How Democrats and radicals unmdermined America's war on terror before and after 9-11" and delivers in full on that premise. "Party of Defeat" is not an apologia for President Bush, the Republican Party or the mishandling of the war in Iraq. Rather, its focus is on how prominent and not-so-prominent Democrats have marched largely in lockstep in a campaign to destroy the credibility of the United States, its miltary and President. Unstated is the reality that all this is done in the name of acheiving power at any price, even the sacrifice of the nation and its freedoms.

To the avid follower of news, world events and politics, nothing here will be new. The falsehoods and distortions of Pelosi, Reid, Murtha, Gore, Schumer, Durbin, Carter and lesser-known Democrats are well known to the well informed. Likewise so are the deeds of Michael Moore, the New York Times and the Washington Post. For those who are knowledgeable, "Party of Defeat' is a well resourced (23 pages of notes) single volume reference to the left's most recent war against the United States. For those less familiar with the facts, "Party of Defeat" is a concentrated course in the truth, one that will wipe aside the misconceptions planted by the left-wing.

Horowitz and Johnson offer nothing that isn't supported by fact.

"Party of Defeat" is a powerful summary of the left's unrelenting war on the United States. Whether you're a news and politics junkie or not, it should be read.

Jerry

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Read this book in an air conditioned room
Once facts are established, it is difficult to perpetuate the myth of "clothes" when the Emperor is naked for all to see. Horowitz is not a spin-meister. He simply connects the dots. The resulting picture is capable of elevating the body temperature very quickly - - unless you choose to pretend the sun rotates around the earth or some such silly notion. You will not like this book if your norm is a knee-jerk reaction to anything which runs counter to programmed belief. The title is provocative to be certain and those who consider themselves "intellectual" may become defensive. Horowitz has an early history as a "radical" and thus a different perspective on events of today. It would be easy to couch this review in typical "culture wars" rhetoric but there is too much of that already from all sides. Clear and honest debate of fact presents the best opportunity for meeting the needs of all.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Party of Defeat - Horowitz Nails It!
Extremely well written and includes pages and pages of references. In other words, this isn't a cheap shot at the Democrats...it is documented proof the lefties will continue their self-serving campaign at the expense of American's and our liberty. I would highly recommend this book to any American who is concerned with the direction our country may go in the November 2008 elections.
