Books : You: Staying Young: The Owner's Manual for Extending Your Warranty

Rating: - don't waste your time!
this book was recommended by my sister in-law. I got annoyed at the sexual innuendos many of a homosexual slant. ex. pg# 362 advises to avoid "hockey-pucked-shaped deodorants in urinals (for those readers lucky enough to frequent the male restroom)."

That's just one example, the book is filled (400 pages) of more of the above and idiotic cartoons that are supposed to be clever. I honestly didn't learn a thing from reading cover to cover hoping for a reprieve for my sister-in-law.

They also like to push medications from sniffle to headaches to aches and pains. Of course they're doctors and tied in with the drug makers, but I vehemently oppose taking a pill for the least bit of what ails you.

Reading was painful as they went out of their way to be clever and cute with their sophmoric humor and tie ins to sex. They droned on trying to make a point and then clubbered you with esoteric terms right from medical school. The result: wasted time trying to understand but lost in a sea of verbose, rambling, perverse word-filler for a useless book!

Rating: - Provides real information; not speculation.
I think that in the main, this is a terrific book. It blends top science with an easy to read format. Some reviewers have grumbled about the cartoons and the folksy script, but it makes the material accessable to everyone.

So my comments:

The good: top of the line science. Real information is provided and recommendations are not based on speculation or weird theories.

The bad: I wonder about the emphasis on supplements. There is so much in the media that is contradictory to the advice here, that it is hard for the layperson to make sense of it. I still don't really know what to take after reading it since I know my doctor is against most supplements.

My other frustration is that I know that most health care systems with their emphasis on cost containment rather than wellness, won't pay for many of the most important tests mentioned in the book. Most of us can't really afford what is recommended. Not the fault of the authors, but frustrating none-the-less. That said, this is a worthwhile read.

I RECEIVED THIS BOOK THIS CHRISTMAS FROM SPECIAL FRIENDS WHO WANT US ALL TO STAY YOUNG AND I IN TURN GAVE THIS BOOK TO MY GIRLFRIENDS WHO ARE HITTING 60 AND 65 THIS YEAR....ITS A GOOD BOOK TO LIVE BY, MAYBE NOT ALL THINGS APPLY BUT THEY WILL SOMEDAY...TRUST ME I KNOW.........:O}

Rating: - Great book ,but !
The book was great but I must admit that I made a mistake when I found out that I could buy it locally for less money without the hassle of through the mail delivery etc. One other thing, the fact that your "England" subsidiary handled a previous order I placed by mistake and it cost me double what I should have spent. They should have caught my error in placing it with through "Google".
