Editorial Review:

Product Description:
Delia Hopkins has led a charmed life. Raised in rural New Hampshire by her widowed father Andrew, she now has a young daughter, a handsome fiance, and her own Search and Rescue bloodhound - which she uses to find missing persons. But as she plans her wedding, she is plagued by flashbacks of a life she can't recall. Then a policeman shows up at her door, arresting her father for the kidnap of a little girl. And Delia's past and present fracture into little pieces. "Vanishing Acts" is a book about the very nature and power of memory. It explores what happens when the past we have been running from catches up to us, and questions who we trust to tell us the story of our lives before we are capable of remembering it ourselves.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - First Encounter with Picoult
Jodi Picoult has characters with lots of depth. Vanishing Acts is a fascinating story of a father and his daughter living a quiet, simple life in a small town in New Hampshire until one day there is a knock at their door...

I enjoyed the style Picoult's writing, hearing from each of the main characters in their own voice. The relationship of Delia, Eric and Fitz, childhood playmates and life long friends, was another fascinating dimension of the book.

Picoult writes of life inside a prison in a sadly believable way. And her trial scenes too are well done.

My one gripe is the relationship of Delia and her daughter Sophie with the next door neighbor in Arizona. It seems a little too familiar too fast and for that it is just not believable or interesting ... Read More

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - So much carelessness!
I only read this because our book discussion group chose it. Many of us were amazed at the inconsistencies and errors in the book. The major error (that seemed to be a case of sloppiness on the author's part) was the age difference of the main characters. If Delia is 32 and her mother gives her age as 47 when she is sworn in at Andrew's trial, then Andrew was guilty of something worse than kidnapping. Marrying and/or getting a 15 year old pregnant would have landed him in Sheriff Joe's jail long before he had a chance to kidnap Delia. Also, it is Sedona that has red earth, not the Hopi reservation. There was so little focus in this novel. Too many issues: parental kidnapping, alcoholism, Hopi creation myths, violent jail conditions, sexual abuse, repressed memories. Pick one or two or ... Read More

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Vanishing Act
Jodi Picoult's "Vanishing Acts", was well written but the story line left much to be desired in my opinion. It's not a book that I would recommend.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Tried to read but couldn't..
This was loaned to me by a co-worker who loved the book. I could not get through it. I tried but couldn't. She could have made this book in half the pages. On and on about her mother and what could have been.
